Getting Up From the Floor Safely - Ask Doctor Jo

If you are practicing these techniques for getting up off the floor, make sure to have someone close by to help if you need it & make sure you have a chair, table, or couch near by to help pull or push yourself up as well.

The best way to get up off the floor is by getting yourself into a lunge position with your stronger leg out in front and push up at your knees to stand.

If your knees are too painful to put on the floor, you can use the downward dog or inch worm movement to “walk” your way up from the floor, but you need to be pretty flexible to do it this way.

Thank you for this video. I am a 72 year old woman who fell while home alone last month. It was terrifying. I tripped over some plastic wrapping on the floor and landed on my knees and palms of my hands. I couldnt get up but thought to crawl down the hall to my bed where I have Pet Stairs for my elderly cats to join me in bed. Thank God for those little stairs. I was able to scoot up the steps onto the bed where my phone was. Thank God for watching over me.

That's truly amazing Doctor. Love ❤ you from the bottom of my heart. I have been struggling to get from the floor. It has been so bad...that I had stopped sitting down totally. Thanks to the exercise...I managed getting up from the floor without anyone else's help. Moreover...I did not experience any pain or discomfort. You are a blessing 🙌. God bless you and your family 👪

Thank you so much Dr. Jo for this helpful video. My 90 year old mother fell the other day and fortunately I was there. But I had the hardest time because as much as my mother tried to get up, it was very difficult. Finally, I had to call Fire Rescue. Thankfully, she was not injured. Again, thank you for this helpful video about something that many of us take for granted. I'm going to watch your video on Plantar Fasciitis of which I was recently a "victim". I did take a few weeks for it to finally go away.

Lol, one of my favorite topics. You are tall and slender, watching you makes the moves very clear. For those of us who are vertically impaired and more rounded than willowy it's just going to take a lot of practice. Even with practice, the reality is, if you have ankle, knee, hip, or wrist problems, it will be a mite painful. The techniques are good, practice helps, but, isn't always fun.

Most people above 60 have some potbelly and it is hard for them to practice this .
I fell down on walkway in California and I was not able to get up easily as my knee was also hurt. A young lady saw me falling and rushed to me, gave her hand to get up from floor! It was on my birthday - 79.
Thanks to her and the American culture of assisting the needy !

This is a PHENOMENAL demonstration!! Thank you!!! I teach yoga to a community of people over 55 who are reticent to do any floor positions because they fear they can't get up off of the floor after they get down there. This will help them IMMENSELY!! I'm a subscriber now for SURE!

Thank you for this. I fell several times over the last few months. I have Ataxia and also a bad left hip. It takes me about an hour to get up with a lot of difficulty. Appreciate the caring that you display!

I have a condition that is similar to MS. my PT told me to get up this way and I just could not do it. The ironic thing is that one day when I was on the floor my son said switch legs. Put ur bad leg bent and push up with my good leg and it worked. I just wanted to share this just in case this doesn't work for you.

Your first method is the way I’ve been doing it instinctively...after two hip replacements....without the chair.

Many thanks for this useful information. I still do a lot of gardening, and often not near anything to push on. My left leg is very weak. Your method has been helpful!

Doctor Jo & Lion for this video. I had reconstructive foot surgery in my left foot in 2019. I have been doing standing exercises but recently bought a yoga mat. To my surprise getting up from the floor was something I can’t do. I am still very protective of my surgery foot so I think that is part of the issue but your video helped. I use the couch but for some reason I turn and use my back arms to push myself up (like a backwards push up) I am going to keep practicing and try to stand from downward dog as you demonstrated. Thank you again!

Erm… It’s a silly story, but I’m just a very thin, weak and lazy person in 20s who likes to lie down to floor all day. My sister said I should get out of her room and me being super lazy, searched if there’s a method to get up easily, and found your video. I didn’t expected much about the simplest thing as wake up, but your video actually helped me a lot!

Personally the most bothersome part of waking up is always that I should give a core muscle full force to take my own body weight at some point, which leads to promised low blood pressure dizziness, but start from light rolling, change posture to lunge and grab something to distribute force to several other muscle and finally waking up!

This gradual step was what I was just looking for, thanks for making me easier to wake up, aaand, I guess I really should start exercise or somethin’ I guess.
