What Do Teens Want in a Hearing Aid? Most Important Hearing Aid Features & Considerations. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses the most important hearing aid features to consider as a Teenager.

I spend most of my time talking about hearing treatment for Adults. However, the listening demands for teens are perhaps even more complex than they are for adults. If you are a teen, you likely find yourself in dynamic and difficult listening environments likely due to your involvement in Junior High, High School, College, and all of the social settings you find yourself in outside of a classroom setting.

So let's take a look at some of the key areas of interest when it comes to the Hearing Aid needs of Teens.

1. Being able to adapt to constantly changing environments - You probably find yourself in different listening situations constantly. Whether it is on a school bus, in a car, in a cafeteria, in a classroom, with a group of friends, or at a school sporting event, each of them require different hearing aid settings to hear optimally.

2. Connectivity - Let's face it, in the 21st century, to be socially engaged, you need to integrate with technology. The more connected your hearing aids are with technology, the more connected you are with family, friends, classmates, and even teachers. If you are like other teens, you are spending between 6 and 9 hours per day online. Connecting to social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, & Snapchat isn't only fun, it is almost a necessity.

3. Rechargeability - There is a good chance that the only thing you own that isn't rechargeable is your hearing aids. Just like a smartphone, teens want their electronics to be rechargeable. Charge them once at night and have them work the entire next day.

These are just a few of the key things that Phonak learned from their Teen Advisory Board. Noticing the absence of Teen Voices in the Hearing Industry, Phonak selected 8 Teen advisors, 4 from the United States and 4 from Canada, to be on their Advisory Board board so Phonak could learn exactly what teens want in a hearing aid. Each one of these teens brought their unique experiences to the table to help shape Phonak’s perspective on what things are important to your age group.

I just want to tell you/y’all I have severe hearing loss and I’m 15 and it’s very scary but let me tell you hearing aids are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’ve had hearing aids since I was 9 and I didn’t get them earlier bc I was scared of bullying but I just learned I am different but in a WAY better way!!

The only downfall I’ve seen of the phonak hearing aids is if you have more then one device I have an iPhone iPad and Apple TVs I could pair them with but sadly everyone has told me you can only have one device paired at a time you can’t just pair them to all devices and switch to the device you want to use

As someone who is just now realizing that I'm in need of hearing assistance but also loves gaming, and with all the updates over the past few years, I can't find any videos on getting a good setup for my kinda folks. I have some ideas on things that could be tested (different brand TV connectors lags, etc) but my resources on the nitty gritty info for the current technologies is very limited.

It is my understanding that the Marvel will only allow one Bluetooth connection at a time. If you want to change the source, you have to forget the connection on the device and reset your HA. I have a phone, iPad, work PC, and a home PC. If I'm watching one of your videos on the iPad and get a phone call, I will miss it. Currently with the ComPilot 2, I have no such problem. Does the ComPilot work with the Marvel? If not, what HA would you recommend that provides this capability with a CrosII setup?

Hello, or phonak hearing instruments are the best now?, I am just about to buy new hearing aids and I thought about Signia Styletto Conect 7 because my old one is Siemens Pure nx 5, but lately I hear a lot of good about Phonak Marvel and I really do not know what to choose: /

Can we talk about colors? Not a teen, but i have wild n crazy glasses. Im allowed to be proud of them and show them off. Am I supposed to be embarrassed about hearing aids? Why only beige, brown, silver, white and black from so many companies? Phonak is the only one that seems to offer red, pink, blue, green, yellow, teal, etc. I love it. Just wish my starkeys were more than just white n silver.

Hey Doctor Cliff...it would be great if you could do a review of a couple of PSAPs that Teens may be willing to wear. They are the BeHear Now from Alango Technologies and BHearing from Jabees. These are both neckband style PSAPs.
