I had the same problem at one point. The contactor was the cause, it was stuck on the closed position. Good video. We have to thank the guys who take time to share information.

Dave, this problem plaques my condenser as well. Now I'll look for frayed wires. Thanks dude... yours is the only video I've found on this subject.

Great fix Dave. That's a new one for me too. In my experience, this situation has always either blown the low voltage fuse or tripped the breaker. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your posting I checked my capacitor and yes I had a dead mouse across the capacitor
I cleaned it off and by gosh it now works perfectly. So grateful for your insights. Thanks again

You helped me take care of my 92 year old mother’s Air conditioner that wouldn’t shut off. The aged electrical contactor was stuck in the down position. I will be replacing it thanks to you.

I loved the troubleshooting. It helped me check off what it could be.

I appreciate you posting this video. My problem was actually the Contactor. I am in Florida and ants seem to love electrical boxes and that includes the A/C Shut off and pretty much any place that is dark and protected. I found the electrical connection area of the Air Conditioner filled with ants and it appears that a couple of unlucky ants got between the contacts and when the thermostat energized the contactor relay the ants got fried and stuck the contacts together. Luckily it is winter in Miami and I was leaving for the weekend so I didn't need A/C and had time to order a new contactor and a spare capacitor (they don't seem to like the heat down here either). If this would have been August I bet I could have pried the contacts apart and it would have worked long enough to order a new one but luckily I didn't have to find that out. Thanks Again!

Great video, I just had a hockey puck style safety switch and condensate pump installed inside my condo.I noticed the next day,
my fan outside runs all the time with a/c off ?, and the lines are freezing up.I'm thinking they didn't wire it up correctly, I'm calling the HVAC company, to come back to see if they caused the problem, or maybe it's just a coincident . Thank you for helping me with the video !!!

I’m glad I watch this because I have a carrier unit that the condensing fan motor keeps running, and the thermostat is satisfied in the blower fan motor in the furnace is shut off.
However, I replaced today the capacitor that was bad, but the condensing motor now stays running and is never satisfied and shut off. I also checked the contact block and the contacts are in perfect shape. I also had the other day refrigeration guy come in at 11 ounces of refrigerant, that’s all it was low. So I don’t understand why the condensing fan motor continues to run???? If I turn The thermostat to off it Drops the coil out on the contactor.
I also Took out the condensing fan motor when I went to get a new capacitor. I mentioned that because the video showed the wire that was shorted to the frame but in this case the wires were fine no shorts to ground.

Why didn’t you put in a rubber grommet? The problem will eventually happen again.
