I have been on that location on that exact spot (Hantane Tea Estate), as well as where the rope bridge scene was shot (Victoria dam).

Every Indiana Jones has a version of this scene. Exposition to justify a quest for a mystical macguffin. Incredulous remarks from some characters. Ominous music creeps in to establish the possibility that there may be something to whatever supernatural folklore is being discussed. Camera zoom for dramatic effect.

The fire in the fields was a diversion tactic to get the men away from the village and while the men of the village were fighting the fire in the fields, the Thugee snuck into the village to snatch the kids because they knew they knew the women were pushovers physically and they probably threaten their children’s lives if they spoke of it to to their husbands or the village elders. That’s my theory.
