My old rig used to use winch blankets to prevent whipping and incase you drop the chain it just falls straight down to the floor after one of my co workers had his nose torn off it was a very smart idea and it should be encouraged more often to find ways to make work safe at the end of the day we all want to go

I worked the rigs in the late 70's and again in early 2000. Quite a difference from back then to 2003 on new rigs. They don't use a spinning chain any more. Top drives, iron roughnecks and excavators do a lot of work we use to do by hand! I spun chain till my arm felt like it was going to fall off...lol It was the most dangerous thing to do on any rig so Im glad top drives replaced them. Oh and these guys both pulled out too much chain. And NEVER let that tail go or someone's gonna get a serious whip in the face or a hand gets snagged and fingers get ripped off! Been there felt the braided rope used for a tail on the chain slap me in the face and had the red welt across my cheek for the next week! lol

Awww I get it. You can’t use any type of motor or driveshaft bc it will produce sparks and catch on fire, chains work best bc treated / rounded surfaces reduces the chance for sparks
