Indonesia tourism might take another extreme toll since the Covid-19 outbreak after officials unveil new laws that restrict political, religious and sexual freedoms. John Iadarola and Jayar Jackson break it down on The Damage Report.

Read more here:

"Tourism operators in Indonesia are still trying to recover from the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now the country's parliament has passed new laws that some fear could turn tourists away once again - because having sex out of wedlock is set to be outlawed.

The controversial laws, which critics have labelled a "disaster" for human rights, also ban unmarried couples from living together and restrict political and religious freedoms. There were protests in Jakarta this week, and the laws are expected to be challenged in court.

The new criminal code is set to take effect in three years and apply to Indonesians and foreigners living in the country, as well as visitors.

It has been widely reported in nearby Australia, where some newspapers have dubbed it the "Bali bonk ban"."

I’m a Swede living in Indonesia. I’ve seen much good and also some bad during my 13 years here. For example, I was unexpectedly very impressed by my host country’s handling of covid. But THIS is appalling. An otherwise descent President has for long been under attack by the religious right, and this is some red meat he felt he had to throw to them.
Indonesia has serious problems - poverty, corruption, ecological emergencies, education disparity, health care disparity (although not as bad as the US), ineffective law enforcement, etc etc . This solves NOTHING. It just adds another layer of problems for many people.

Most Americans don't realize how close we came to exactly what's going on in Indonesia

And suddenly Indonesia wonders why all their tourism income has disappeared and why they're mass migrations from the country.

That is seriously going to cause problems for their tourism industry.

So tourists who arent married now have to get separate rooms?
Wont be long before they outlaw hand holding, kissing, etc in public.... who would want to visit a country like that?
I trust Indonesia doesnt rely on their tourist industry?

Me: "What are you in here for?"
My Cellmate: "Murder. What did you do to get locked up here?"
Me: "A less than stellar date with Tina".

So what you're telling me is that they don't want any tourism at all? Great first step...

Most Republicans looked at this and are like "Great Idea!" meanwhile Matt Gaetz is generally on board but wants exceptions if you pay for sex or they're underage.

Republicans in the US would love to do this

I would imagine that these laws are from North Korea not fleeing Indonesia

This will be great for the tourist trade.

Well keep electing people like Trump and you'll have similar rules soon enough.

The problem Is that those laws also affect the people just visiting the country. So, if you are gay and legally married, you can go to jail or worse....

Oh we're not having sex, we're just roommates, nothing to see here

I imagine gay sex was already illegal.

Idonesia have been forging stronger links with Saudi Arabia. Expect them to flex religious muscle.

I suggest all women who are living there to leave now. Good job on never having any visitors come to that country
