Explaining gravitational waves

Paul McNamara, ESA LISA Pathfinder Project Scientist, explains gravitational waves.
ESA’s LISA Pathfinder lifted off 3 December on a Vega rocket from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on its way to demonstrate technology for observing gravitational waves from space.

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime, predicted a century ago by Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, published on 2 December 1915.

LISA Pathfinder will test the extraordinary technology needed to observe gravitational waves from space. At its core is a pair of identical 46 mm gold–platinum cubes separated by 38 cm, which will be isolated from all external and internal forces acting on them except one: gravity.

Can anyone please tell me, from where can I get that cloth?? I need it in school science fair.

I'm curious to know why a linear ripple like on a lake versus the shock wave of an air burst expanding in all directions. Are Stars and their spin directions and any planetary masses orbiting them the determiners of the 'surface' the ripples expand across? No doubt remedial questions but thanks for any knowledgeable replies.

As someone who knows nothing about science, I'm curious on whether this means that at some point the orbit of the earth will become shorter and it will take shorter for a full orbit causing a potential collide with the sun which would be the object causing the waves? or am I just terribly confused on what gravitational waves are?

Does it mean that so many stars goes into that black hole everyday or every month or every year and one day our planet could go in that?

Why do people always explain gravitational force using gravitational tricks with balls ? I think that is stupid. It doesn't say anything about underlying mechanism of gravitation.
