I think it's based on a fighting style all about fighting dirty to get every and any advantage.
I believe it was mentioned at the end of an hour long combat documentary for the game.

Doesnt work for me even if I spam the block button and I block before the green shield. This game is beyond frustrating

To be honest... If you get a hit to the neck (even if you have 2 layers of mail), its gonna be very painful (plus, you used mace)
