Inside a prisoner of war camp for Russians in Ukraine – BBC News

Ukraine and Russia have been cooperating with prisoner of war exchanges despite the continuing war.

Kyiv said this month it had secured the release of 1,762 men and women so far in prisoner swaps.

These are highly sensitive operations, often taking months to arrange. Under the Geneva Conventions, prisoners of war must not be paraded or exposed to the public.

The BBC has been given rare access to one facility where captured Russian soldiers are held in the west of Ukraine.

Not really re-education in the sense many would think. They are just showing how Ukraine DOES have history and is a real country and culture. Putin claims Ukraine isn't even a country. They are being shown the truth. We did that with the Nazi POWs too. We showed them how their propaganda had lied to them and why their ideals were wrong

These men are being treated better in Ukrainian captivity than they are by their own country on the battlefield.

They might prefer to spend the war there than as part of the spring offensive.

His mother didn’t care about her son, calling Ukrainians bloody. If my mother would say this, it means to me she doesn’t care about my wellbeing. So sad to be a Russian.

These men are treated better than the prisoners in Russian prison. Ukrainian soldiers who have been traded back are skinny and pale compared with others. Thank you 💛

These guys are ironically the lucky ones, their army mostly treats their men like expendable items. Damned if they fight, damned if they don't, but better in a jail with warm food & clothing away from conscription, their detached commanders and their opponents sharp end.

must be odd as an inmate to hear the sirens go off.

BBC news makes it sound like educating the Russian soldiers with reality based history is a bad thing. I think it's extremely important.

Re-educating Russians is a good thing, so I don't understand why BBC makes it sound so terrible. They need all the education that they can get!

These occupiers are treated according to all international rules, despite the fact they breached the international law, participating in the invasion of Ukraine, in war crimes, and before, supporting the illegal annexation of Crimea. 90% of the Russian population supported that annexation (I was among 10%, who didn't support that, when I lived there).

I have seen the humanity in only ukrainian's eyes.
They even know what prison really means.
Its a correction centre, not a hell of tortures unlike most countries.
Slava Ukraini🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Glory to Ukrain🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

And my deep condolenses goes out to all soldiers, be it russians or ukrainians.
