I nearly bought the nearest house to Gruinard island. The equivalent in Scotland. Couldn’t understand why it was so cheap.

Anthrax was a thrash metal band in the late 80' s and early 90's .

Anthrax Island sounds like a Bond villain’s vacation home! 🧬🕵‍♂

If you ever think "oh, the government would never do THAT". Oh, yes it would.

I remember a senior soldier who adamantly refused anthrax vaccinations. I took all mine. I'm very much still alive.

Side note, after 911 and then all the anthrax scares, Suffield held all the anthrax scientist experts. Great video. Thank you.

Throughout the second half of the 20th Century we regularly campaigned to have Gruinard Island decontaminated. As it is only a few hundred metres from the mainland, Anthrax spores were easily blown over to the North West Highlands. In 1988, after decades of inaction by the Westminster Government it was obvious that direct action was required. Soil was collected from Gruinard Island* and taken to London where it was surreptitiously emptied into planters in the lobbies of several public buildings (including the Ministry of Defence).
The authorities were informed of this action (including the locations) and also told that this was just the beginning and that Anthrax contaminated soil would continue to be deposited in London until our island was cleaned up. Lo and behold, once the Ministry of Defence tested the samples from London a massive clean up of Gruinard was ordered. The decontamination of Gruinard was completed in 1990.

NB. - * The soil was not actually taken from Gruinard Island, but from the mainland opposite the island.

Something the current US population should consider: the Geneva Convention was written BECAUSE of the Canadians

Took them quite a while to figure out that that stuff doesn't care about borders or nationalities.

Great book about this history called "Deadly Allies: Canada's Secret War 1937-1947" by John H. Bryden

You should do a video about why Canada’s actions helped create the Geneva Convention

Wow I definitely learned a few things about my nations history today. I didn't know CFB Suffield was the primary location for storage and testing of bio weapons. I didn't know there was an Island in the St. Lawrence that was a bio weapons lab for 20+ years. Bankrolled by a whisky distiller and a department store magnate, and founded by the guy who figured out insulin. This world is a funny old place most of the time. I love these deep dives into history. I always learn something.
