NASA's Plan To Stop A Rogue Asteroid:
Earlier this year a kilometer-wide asteroid came hurtling towards the Earth at more than 34,000 mph passing within the moon's orbit. Luckily, NASA didn't need to keep that asteroid from hitting Earth. The object, nicknamed PZ39, has been on NASA’s radar, since way back in 2002. It’s just one of the more than 20,000 near-earth asteroids they monitor.

In the movies, you often see the US launching a nuclear bomb at an incoming asteroid to blow it to bits. But in real life, that plan wouldn't work very well. But don't worry NASA's come up with 5 asteroid deflection techniques to save us and redirect an incoming asteroid.

From using a kinetic impactor (literally smacking something into the asteroid), to using a net, to firing space lasters, to even sending little landers to the surface of the asteroid to eat away at the surface, NASA's come up with 5 ingenious ways to stop a rogue asteroid on a collision course with Earth. These systems make up Earth's asteroid defense system.
