If you’re younger and managing someone who’s obviously more experience both in life and in business don’t act like you’re gods gift to programming and like you’re hot shit, you’re obviously in a privileged position and for whatever reason you need to value his experience instead of throwing your weight around

Hmm, I was a broadcast tech for 21 years. Every time we would get younger employees, I'd treat them as equals. They would treat me as beneath them and with attitude.

You're right, interpersonal skills are paramount. I'm not sure that's something being passed along as much these days. Delivery goes a long way in managing today's diverse group of employees.

They say people aren't leaving bad jobs a much as bad bosses.

The older guy has created this problem for himself. Why is he working as a PHP dev at 50 years old? He has put himself into a situation where his competition is much younger. As a dev, you want to avoid this because dev is a young mans game. As an older dev you have to leverage your experience to compete, this older guy is not able to do this much in PHP dev since it is a low entry level tech. He should be pitching himself as a senior C++ developer on trading systems, or something like that where nobody under 35 could really compete. Since he may have no choice but to go into the lions den of programming in PHP then this older guy should let the younger one run the show, and just do what he is told until he retires or the young guy makes mistakes or needs help. You cannot beat the system.
