Throughout the years of my martial arts journey I’ve heard the phrase multiple times from higher and higher degree/Dan instructors and that is “The more you know how to fight, the less you need to.”

With confidence there's also kindness towards ourselves, which projects to everything we do.

I'm currently an ultra distance runner; use to be a national powerlifter champ, D1 footballer, and now Pop's to two kids. I tell and show them 'compassion is a person's' greatest strength. If you're not afraid, why take a fight or flight response? I admire stories like this Vin, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reframing things. Kindness is not weakness. It is awareness.

You're spitting some strong spiritual facts here even tho it doesn't look it. Your confidence is a by product of truly being in your being, being a master of your-Self....

Have the capacity for aggression, but don't use it unless necessary. Great lesson there!

Reminds me of a verse from Proverbs, "Avoiding fights is a badge of honor, quarreling is for fools."

"Confident in his ability" No reason to prove yourself to those less than you. They arent bad people, they just dont know. And they dont need to know.

I hope to grow in my own confidence and not fake it. Very interesting anecdote.

For the longest time, I couldn't understand this strong drive to learn martial arts.. Compared to my other interests, like music or philosophy - where you could take your developed skills and create something.. some ideas, some poignant verbiage that might move people or continue to exist as your legacy when you pass on - martial arts wasn't something I could wrap my mind around in those terms.. "A good martial artist doesn't need to use martial arts."..? So I might never use these skills? What's the point of the time, energy, and emotion invested in skills I HOPE to not use.. I can teach, but I can't *TRANSMIT* instantly.

This video reminds me of my motivation after I found the reason for my drive: There are skills meant to demonstrate by *doing*. Martial arts, however, develops a sense of rare confidence that is demonstrated by *being*.

It is this confidence- this compassion one can only afford when they can free themselves from the fear of another.. that is my drive to continue practicing martial arts.

It’s real simple. If you know you’re good at something, you don’t have to prove anything to anyone. It creates a calmness in you that other people pick up as confidence.
