Creating Great Bass Lines is Easy (Just Steal 'Em)

All great bassists steal. So if you wanna create your OWN killer bass lines...also steal. I’ll show you how - without being a hack.

You’re jamming with your band - the drummer drops a killer groove, the guitarist jumps in, and the new song is sounding amazing… until you get totally stuck coming up with a decent bass line. Ouch.

So, just rip off one of your favorite bass lines and you’ll sound like the next Jamerson or Flea, right? Nah, not cool. Great artists STEAL but they don’t COPY.

The good news? There are (at least) 7 stupidly simple methods to capture the feel of your favorite lines and make them your own. So how do you steal like an artist, not copy like a hack? In this video, you’ll learn:
- How to turn ANY classic into your own cool sh*t
- How to borrow the feel of a song *without* stealing
- How to incorrectly pronounce Måneskin
- That notes aren’t the only thing that can be stolen
- Why you shouldn’t search for the song “Lust for Life” on PirateBay

Thanks! When I picked up the electric bass, at 68, I had played stand-up for 5 years, but your course was exactly what I needed and why I wanted to play the bass. From the first lesson of Beginning to Badass, you are playing music, even if it is only one note. You teach only what you need to move forward, then you keep applying it. I ALWAYS FELT SUCCESSFUL, you anticipate problem and made me relax and build confidence. It was always fun! YOU ARE A TEACHER’S TEACHER, highly highly recommended. Now I am playing and enjoying at a level that makes me proud. Thank you.

This realization unlocked my creativity decades ago. Before it, I used to be way too precious about my "original" stuff and as a consequence I was suffering from writer's block and didn't create much.

As soon as I realized that I could liberally borrow and steal ideas from my favorite artists and make them my own, my musical output increased tenfold and I had enough material to propel my band for nearly a decade.

What a great video, I learned some songwriting techniques, some music history, and I genuinely laughed out loud at that Voltaire quote

Bravo monsieur,
Bravo.

Bro, I have played bass since I was in 8th grade and I am retired now at 64. Your lessons are far beyond the norm. The time, effort and creativity in your lessons is second to none. I will share your videos with everyone I know who wants to get a grip - or better grip - on bass. Well thought out lesson. I will do my best to help you get 1 Million subs! You deserve it. That said, I do not recommend stealing a bass line. You will not be monetized on YT. :-) Withstanding, I've had that happen to me before, but I am not a real musician so it did not matter. He did eventually send me a check for $99! No joke. LOL. Thanks for this video. Peace. - Ron

On Black Sabbaths Paranoid album the main riff Geezer uses for the song Paranoid is E with an octave /5th arpeggio. Planet Caravan uses the same riff exactly with a bend the whole song.

The best riff I ever made was a mixture of a primus riff and a little segment from a Cliff Burton solo. I changed the rythm and tempo and mixed the two licks together and it sounds AWESOME.
When I tell people what it is they go "Oooooh yeah that's right!", but if I don't talk about noone would ever know.

I once tried to turn Hora Decubitus by Charles Mingus into a rock/metal song. Sent a demo to my bandmates and after listening to it the other day realised: cool, i just wrote peace sells.

Once again an excellent video, thank you so much. Reminded me a lot about Dylan Carlson from the band Earth who always said his "one good idea" was to steal some parts of his favorite fast heavy metal riffs, slow em down and repeat them into 15 minutes stoner jams !

Im a beginner and I'm feeling way to discouraged about my playing, I have anxiety and depression and music really helps so I decided to learn bass but I can't even practice with getting frustrated with myself and doubting that I'll be "decent" let alone good, i just wanna enjoy making music for myself and others but ever time I pick up the bass I get more depressed....I just wanna have fun
