Write More Creative, Interesting Bass Lines With These 2 Methods

Let’s talk about how to make more creative bass lines!

Most beginning bass players are happy just to get through a song using roots and 5ths. They work well and they sound OK.

But after a while, a lot of bass players at this level get bored and start to feel like everything they play just sounds the same.

The problem is that most bass players at this level aren’t ready for crazy fills or complex improvisation. Thankfully there’s a massive middle ground between the ultra-simple and the super complex.

Exploring that middle ground is exactly what I want to do with you today. So if you can’t seem to get past roots and 5ths in your bass lines, or simply want to inject some of your own personality and flavor to your bass lines, then this is the perfect lesson for you.

The things I talk about in this video are just two methods of injecting your own creativity and making more creative bass lines. There are certainly other ways to do it too, but these will definitely be a good start for you though.

Once you’ve made a bass line of your own though, how do you know if it’s any good? You can be as creative as you want when you make your own lines, but if they don’t function well in the song you’re playing, none of that creativity matters.

That’s why I created the Bass Lines From Scratch Checklist. It’s a totally free resource you can use to make sure that the bass lines you create are actually good! Just go through the checklist process and see how your line stacks up.

To get the checklist, just go to this page:

Fill out the form, and I’ll send it straight to your email address, along with all the tabs, notation and practice tracks from all the Basslines From Scratch lessons.

As always, if you have questions about anything you see in the lesson, just let me know in the comments. I’m always happy to help out!

Good luck with the lesson and happy bass line creating!

Cheers,

Luke

I am currently learning bass privately up here in Kenya. I found this very useful.
1. Diatonically Walking up or down roots.
2. Chromatically walking up or down the roots
3. Root inversions.

Thank you.

I’m a guitarist and am learning the bass and how to approach it. Your lessons are phenomenal. Thank you!

For anyone theory inclined, the reason walking down chromatically to the root note sounds decent and "familiar" is because of the flat 2nd, the characteristic note of the phrygian mode which is used very often in modern music to create a sense of speed and tension.

Hey simple at it is, this has been puzzling me how bass players play any song out of the root notes. Im just amazed how they create simple basslines that is pleasing to my ears.

Finally, a man after my own heart ! Aside from repetitive drumming, the lack-luster bass-lines since the 1960s have left me disappointed. Looking forward to your other videos and thanks.

On Blue on Black, the guitars were going to the G but my ear found that going to the B worked better. I justified it because it was part of th G cord. Now I know why I was correct. Awesome lesson Luke. Thank you.

Dumb question. Do you use the chord notes from the chord you are leaving or the chord you are going to
