The Emergency Errata With Giant Germ

Giant Germ is a card which can summon 2 other copies of itself from the deck when it's destroyed by battle. However in the original version of the card, had the text that said after it was destroyed by battle, deal 500 burn dmg to your opponent and then "You can also take cards of the same name from your Deck and Special Summon them to the field in face-up Attack Position.". However this card failed to mention which cards you take from your deck with the same name and summon them into attack position. So based on the original wording of the card, you could summon any two monsters from your deck when giant germ was destroyed, as long as they had the same name, which even in modern Yu-Gi-Oh would be a super good effect. So they had to have special rulings that stated it only worked on other copies of itself, before it eventually got an errata to specify it only summoned 2 giant germ cards from your deck.

Wow, didn't know Giant Germ used to be that bonkers. Even if it had to be destroyed by battle for the effect to activate, you'd probably still have to ban a monster that could special summon any two monsters with the same name from the deck.

lol the other day i saw the errated version of giant germ and though "why i was so stupid to think you could summon any monster from the deck?" now i realize they changed the text. i wasnt that stupid

So a possible play was
Summon GG->Attack something bigger->Special summon 2 GGs-> Attack something bigger->Summon 2 Blue eyes-> Last GG attacks something bigger->Summon 2 Armored Insects->Proceed to beat down? That is pretty brutal for DM to early GX era.

Geez… Wish I’d realised this all those years ago. I used to play Giant Germ all the time. Setting it and then playing two Blue-Eyes White Dragons when it was attacked would’ve been hilarious!

Wow, as a kid, I always thought it meant 2 copy of itself but in hindsight, the wording does allow you to summon any two monsters with the same name. That's pretty neat.

Wording matters, so whoever translates the cards needs to understand both languages very well

If two or more “Gigantic Germs” from your hand or field are used as cost/material for the summon or effect of a card, Target 1 monster from the field or GY; you can special summon monsters with the same name as the targeted monster from your deck up to the number of “Gigantic Germs” used._

As a kid I used to exploit this loophole all the time and it was part of the fun of Yu-Gi-Oh. Was finding loopholes like this. Then errata changed everything
