What's the Difference between Lutherans and Baptists? A Tale from McDonald's

True story: I was in this McDonalds when a lady asked about the difference between the Lutheran and the Baptists. We talked about Jesus, and how He makes a decision for us. "That's the most wonderful thing I've ever heard!" she said.

I came from an SBC background and am now Lutheran. I think sometimes what Baptists call salvation, is really more sanctification. God ALONE saves, but we "participate" in our surrender to Christ daily in obedience. Sometimes I think it's a semantic game.

Nice video, but I think the differences aren't as great as what's being described. I was a Southern Baptist for most my life and my wife and I recently joined a Lutheran church where we have some good friends. We've been members for 3 years now. I realize there may be different Baptist views out there, but most Baptists believe the same tenants of faith as Lutherans. The Baptists do have an alter call, but that is simply acknowledging what Christ has done -- that He's done all the work (same as Lutheran view). When the Baptist use terms like "receiving" or "accepting" that doesn't necessarily imply a works-based theology(arrow pointing up). It's simply appropriating or recognizing what God has done (arrow pointing down). Even Lutheran's expect their members to "acknowledge" publicly and verbally that they agree with what doctrines are taught. Granted, individuals may interpret Baptist or Lutheran teachings differently and err toward the idea that they are "choosing" God or "making a decision" for God. But fundamentally, Lutherans and Baptist believe the same thing -- that God does the saving, that God does the work, that the Gospel message and His grace are sufficient.

Had she been a Reformed Baptist the conversation would have been pretty different because she would have said no to the question about altar calls.
