Three foreign-born Japanese residents filed a lawsuit on January 29, 2024, against the national and local governments for alleged police racial profiling. The suit comes amid a debate over what it means to be and look Japanese, after a Ukrainian-born model was crowned the new Miss Japan.

Dont feel bad. I've seen so many even japanese citizens also stopped by police, to check their identification cards and bags. my husband, a japanese citizen, stopped by police many times he said. Its for protection.

1) Japan's vaunted harmony is mostly predicated on a homogenous population and generations of social conditioning. It (was) a system that worked until low birth rates and economic prosperity demanded a more diverse population. Now Japanese society is experiencing several upheavals because of more foreign ideas and perspectives.

Living wherever you want is not a human right. If the Japanese do not want a multi-cultural society, that's their right. They probably should have not admitted people they did not think would be able to integrate into society to begin with. But if they are bringing in people on their own will, then they should try to be more fair.

I think it's better than getting smacked in the face randomly in America. And no shot they are actually feel racially profiled, the police force is in full swing almost everyday, I got stopped several times being an Asian what does that mean? Heck, they do random bike checks, even I got stopped and questioned about the bike to which I had to call my friend to tell her to come to me to prove the registration on the bike. Which is crazy to me that BIKES need to be registered to prevent bicycle theft.

Japan never promised anything to outsiders. Their system isn't designed for it. Its entry at your own risk.

In Japan, it is usual thing for the police to stop pedestrian in order to protect public order. Actually, regardless of races, if the police judge a person as a suspicious person, the person is stopped even he is Japanese.

I heard the police do stop and check people there, even for bikes, to prevent theft. That's just what they do

I did think that Japan is a deeply racial country, in that they make a big deal over people who don't look Asian. So I can definately see them racial profiling. But also extremely rude when it comes to weight issues. I wasn't even that big when I was there but japanese strangers would think it's a normal thing to discuss your weight with you or say you eat too much (when i was on the street and not even eating).

You really can't blame them, the Nippon Police has successfully dismantled the Yakuza, they don't want some foreigners to come to their country and start another crime syndicate. As the saying goes, if you ain't us, you're bound to go against us.

Also Japanese people who looks different (like piercings, tattoos, colored hair) are getting searched for drugs and stuff…
When you friendly let them do their search, they police won’t cause any trouble.
No need to feel hurt when they do that, it’s for public safety.
