I left the corps because of 1st wife syndrome. She didn't like the corps. I joined the Army and she didn't like that either. We divorced. Met a girl in the Army and we got married and 2 kids and 30 yrs later still together.

I did 4 years active USMC, applied for Army Warrant Officer Flight School, got accepted and retired as a CW4 with over 4000 flight hours in helicopters. No regrets, still serving as a contractor overseas. Thanks for the video, wish you the best!

My brother was in the Marines as a aircraft recover. I was in the Army as a infantryman and he had asked me what it's like to be in the infantry and he wanted to try it out. He completed his contract with the Marines and got out then switched over to the Army and he's a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. He loves jumping out of planes and he says the training is pretty cool....Gets to do a lot of MOUT

Insightful testimony. When I joined the army at 17 I thought I knew it all. How wrong was I. I only ever wanted to be infantry and it gave me the building blocks for every single success in my life. I only did 4 years but it literally made me. God knows what would have become of me if I hadn't signed up. Abousloutely no regrets. Grunts rock.

If I had a dime for every time I was in the Army and heard a Soldier say to me "I was going to join the Marines but..."
Was nice being able to choose my MOS. 19K. I miss it. The Marine Corps will always have my heart, but the Army was a good experience and I spent much more time there.

I retired from the Army and I’m old and slow now lol. Enjoyed your video and glad to see the Army is in great hands.

Did 5 years in the Army, Field Artillery, 87-92. Got out and visited a Coast Guard recruiter. Had pretty much the same experience as CBA. Re-take ASVAB. Re-take basic training. Get demoted. When I asked the recruiter (he was on his way out to retirement), why a prior service would have to go through all this, he was very honest. He told me that the Coast Guard being a small organization, they could be picky. He said that basically they don't want other services "trash", so they make it difficult. Needless to say, I passed on the Coast Guard.

You are absolutely correct that once you get into a kind of unit that has an actual selection process - after being selected you are surrounded by people who are much more capable and motivated to do their jobs - and it makes life so much better! The harder the selection you pass - the better and more like-minded people you will be working with. Thanks for sharing your experience - USA!

Great honesty mate. I agree with the leadership aspect and the career paths that are available to you. In the Royal Marines it’s quite the same. It’s a great place to be, but at the same time you are restricting your self by being there

People might no want to hear this, but there are a lot of Marines and former marines who wished they had joined the army....just like there are many sailors who wished they had joined the Air Force or the coast guard....that's the sad truth...

You are in the service of your country. Doesn't matter how or where. You do you. Thank your for all of the insightful comments. Leadership needs to listen to committed young leaders like you.

No matter what branch you serve in, serving your country for a short period of time is a good thing. So, thank you for your service! I served 4 years in the Marines from 1975 - 1979 and I don't regret it. I am sure you feel the same way.

I learned more than just how to be a Marine. I was only 17 when I enlisted, so I obviously still had a lot to learn.

Thanks for sharing this. I did four years active Navy from Dec83-Dec87. Ten years later, I stepped off the bus at Parris Island, I was 32. Unfortunately my contract went ELS because of an aggravation to an older injury. When the Army extended the age limit to 42, I tried one more time to get into shape to go back. Sadly, I ran out of time. I'm now 55, homeless in a veterans house and wondering about how my life might have been different if I had just tried a little harder or been motivated just a little more. Such a shame that the first enlistment puts such a bad taste in our mouth. By the time we get to the end of it, all we know is the sh!t detail and aren't able to look past it to that second contract. I tell every serviceman I come into contact with, 'Stay In'. Civilians don't think the same way as military people and it is a constant struggle to survive on the whims of others with no real direction in life.

This was an excellent video, cheers! The rank system of the marines sound pretty familiar to the Finnish army. And I do have to agree that the military is a fantastic place for maturing early. Part of the reason why I think the conscription system here in Finland is so successful.

If you're looking for other topics, would love to hear your thoughts on the marines new direction ( getting rid of tanks etc.) as well as your experiences from Korea and other places abroad. With an open like yours it would be great to hear what you've seen and learnt from your experiences.

Old englishman with no military background here. Fascinating insight, I've seen similar structural differences between organisations I've been employed in over the years (though not so critical as the ones you've mentioned, re equipment and knock-on effects of bad attitude). Your experience of shortcutting entry into the army reminds me of dreams (not quite nightmares, but not good dreams) I'd have as a kid where I'd turn up at school wearing pyjamas and slippers, and feel weird because everyone else had the school uniform on👍👍

Hi, both the Army and Marines are the best, my brother loved the Army, I like the video and appreciate the information.

When I first joined the US Navy, I met a bunch of former Marines that had transferred to the Navy. They did it to get certain training not afforded as Marines. They never left the Feeling of being a Marine which benefited me as a sailor I learned both the Navy’s way and the Marine Corp way. Not a bad thing.

As a Canadian, I totally appreciated and enjoyed listening to your military "testimonial"/journey up to date... Thank you for your service, from your neighbor to the north. :0)
