A lift from spawn to smithy wouldn't make sense... The lifts take you exactly where they would if you actually rode them all they really do is bring you from one level of the hub to another saving you having to run up the ramps/stairs. They are also meant to represent a delivery system and not made for riding, like they are meant to send supplies and materials up and down levels you are able to use it as transport because you hop on a bucket and hold on to the chain... Anyway.. To go from spawn to smithy it would have to be a hanging hook thing that you grab and it takes you up at an angle to the smithy but having criss-crossing lines along with the horizontal ones would just end up a cluttered mess. I'm sure they tested that too having the ability to go directly from one place to another but like I said it would be way too cluttered and so they probably scrapped it immediately.
