The process of canonization in general is super fascinating. I hate that Dan Brown ruined it for so many people.

I heard the legend at a C.O.G.I.C. church I used to attend. It was followed by lots of whooping, hollering and uber-emotional gesturing, attesting to gods power. In the moment I never questioned it. Today I find myself more interested in why I didn’t question it. After watching the “Princess Alice Experiment” I now realized how easily a person can accept mysterious unseen agency in your youth or when properly primed. Since the agent is unseen, one can never really know anything about the agency you have adopted. You are forced to defer to and rely on “authority” that speaks on behalf of the agent.

As an atheist, I do find it a shame when people misinterpret religious history for some agenda or conspiracy theory. Some people assume that because the church lacked the backing of the state it was all chaos before Constantine put it in line. In reality, the early church had pretty much reached a concensus on the books long before Christianity was even legal to practice.

The Council of Rome (382) presided under Pope St. Damascus I listed the Canons of the Bible. Pope St. Damascus then had St. Jerome translate the Bible in better Latin than was used at the time resulting in the Vulgate version of the Bible.

At the time of Pope St. Damascus, Latin had replaced Greek as the Liturgical Language of the Roman Patriarchate since very few Christians spoke Greek as they had in the early centuries of the Western Church.

Hey there, Dan! Thanks so much for clarifying this!! Also, do u already have a video or TikTok explaining the process of how the Bible (as if there was such a thing as THE Bible) was compiled over the centuries? Which books were in and which were out? If so, please point me to it!🙏🏼

It wasn't actually officially fixed until the Council of Rome of 382, following Athenasius' suggested list.

I have also heard for some reason that it wasn't fixed until the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century, but that seems to have been a decree affirming the Vulgate as the official bible of the Catholic church.

That makes no sense. How can 50 high quality copies of the Scriptures be made unless a decision were made as to what would be included, and what would not be included.

It is utterly ridiculous of you to pretend that The Bible already existed, and Constantine just wanted 50 super duper nifty editions made: "That Bible you have there with two disvisions called The Old Testament and The New Testament, well, I'm putting in an order for 50, spare no cost."

Utter rubbish.

A better and an academic response would be to discuss how The Bible got assembled in AD 325.

Yeah you’re right it was over the divinity of Jesus.

Why does Jerome then say that canon was discussed in council of Nicea?

I invite a Christian reasonable response to Adnan Rashid's video on this topic, about Nicea 325

The Council of Nicea brought together a factious grouping of religious authorities. Constantine then said that he would pay for the production of the Bible manuscripts.

There had to be content for these Bibles. In order for that to be content there had to be something of agreement, so whether this agreement of content came during the actual Council of Nicea or afterwards, the Council of Nicea was critically important for this process getting underway.

Therefore it is your dogma that nice yeah had nothing to do with the Bible.

I suspect that you are aware of this brcause, to bolster your position, you say that Nicea had nothing to do with the composition of the Bible. The composition? Well, whoever said that?

I know you're going after a lot of falsehoods about Nicea, but don't gin up your own falsehoods to do it.

I can't help but feel like that last comment was a tad accusatory.

Is the way that canonisation happened too complicated for a short ?
