My grandfather & father were farmers of cantaloupes and watermelon. I was taught that when you slap the watermelon and listen, in comparing to one another
1. The deeper pitch sound the watermelon makes the riper, it is, meaning it can be just right or it can be overly ripe, and older and Fluffy flesh in the middle.
2. The higher pitch sound means that the fruit is turgid and juicy and fresher, but could be unripe.
3. You want to find the middle ground for fresh, and juicy fruit. (My personal prefrence is to go middle high pitch) avoiding overly ripe fluffy middle.
4. There is no physical indication on a melon that indicates how sweet the fruit will be. The brown and green stem Natasha talks about is not an indication of sweetness, it only indicates when it was harvested. Green = freshly picked. If end is brown does not necessarly mean the melon is not fresh and good to eat. Watermelons stored correctly can last upto 3 weeks.

Happy Melon hunting!

also wash using some sort of surfectant, not simply water. baking soda and/or vinegar work well. seeded melons are best choice

We live in watermelon country here in Texas and all of this is true! We actually eat salt on our watermelon because it brings out the sweetness even more!

I live in the Mediterranean and it always has a bridge of black seeds inside.

I disagree about seeded and seedless. I prefer seedless. Michigan's seedless watermelons are super sweet. Whoever can't find a sweet seedless melon needs to buy from a Farmer's Market or a farmer. Most watermelons bought from stores likely are weeks old before you take them home. Seeded watermelon pose a choking hazard to small children and some adults with swallowing issue. Seedless for them is always best!

Good to know! Unfortunately, that is a GMO watermelon, not a real one, because there's no black seeds. Bring back the black seeds!

Some people say to let the watermelon stay in the fridge at least a night before cutting it because it maximizes the sweetness
