Do you guys remember the Occupy Wallstreet movement? The general slogan was "We are the 99%" It was a call of unity for the common people, no matter who you were. But somehow that died out, do you know what rose at that same time? Identity politics. Divisions based on your gender, your race, your sexuality, everything. The amount of news covering these topics skyrockets exactly as news about occupy wallstreet plummets.
Personally, I believe this is the active work of that 1%. There are some stories who wrote about how identity politics was 'invented' to break up the Occupy Wallstreet movement. It's eerie to learn about. It is basically what Caesar said: "Divide and conquer"

Best way to avoid an echo chamber is just to keep asking questions.
Any doubts? Ask. Feeling positive? Ask. Keep interrogating what you know and the sources, and you'll be much harder to fool.
A good question to start with is "Who benefits?"
