In this Canon R7 review, I explain why I think the Canon EOS R7 Is a great starter camera for filmmaking. And, I compare it to the more expensive Canon EOS R6.

You might be surprised at how similar it is to the more expensive Canon cameras, as well as how the Canon EOS R7 performs in low light.

All in all, the Canon EOS R7 is great for videography, and I show you why it just may be the *perfect* starter camera out right now for filmmakers.

I agree with your conclusions and have used Canon cameras since purchasing an Ftb-QL in 1977. The Canon R7 is the biggest affordable leap in capabilities I've seen. The features that sealed the deal for over other Canon mirrorless bodies are the unlimited video record time, 32 megapixel sensor, Goldilocks size (not too big or small, just right) and price. Thanks for the affirmation.

Thanks for the R7 and R6 comparison reveiw. R7 has awesome Auto Focus performance and beautiful image quality. The Canon R7 takes dual UHS-II/UHS-I SD memory cards. No overheating issue. I love my R7.

I have the R7, RP, and M50. The only thing I don't like about the R7 is rolling shutter. Other than that, I love it.

I think both are 10 bit, not 8 bit as you mentioned. Thanks for the video.

Can you test out the external audio on the R7? What I noticed with mine is that if I have a mic on one channel and leave the other channel blank then the resulting playback you can hear digital noise on the unused channel. You have to use headphones and turn up the volume or just edit and boost the blank channel. The noise goes with the voice on the active channel and if you stop the digital noise on the empty channel also stops. I have tried this not only with the built in mic jack but also with the tascam ca-xlr2d-c adapter going through the digital hotshoe and it has the same issue. Anytime either the left or right channel is unused I get the sparkle sounding digital noise.

Could I ask if you have a problem with noise when filming with your R7? I have noticed a high pitched, mechanical, whirring noise, almost like a tiny fan with my R7. It seems to be on all the time when the camera is switched on, even when not filming. Just wondered if you have the same issue and how you deal with it on your clips. Thanks 😊

r7 is not a camera for filmmakers - it was not designed for this porpose. it has bad rolling shutter - the sensor readout speed is not fast enough - the sensor is 32mp, not stacked no bsi - this means its the 4 year old sensor of the 90d with some minor changes, paired with a newer processor. more professional options for the same price or cheaper would be: black magic pocket cinema camera 4k, lumix S5 - these have a dual gain iso sensor - lot more dynamic range. lensselection on r7 is horrible - all lenses have pretty slow apertures.

Ya but the glaring issue with the r7 and any current/future Canon crop sensor cameras is A) lack of lenses / you can use full frame lenses but they're not designed for crop sensor cameras. And B) no third party lenses. So basically your lens selection is, and will be pitiful, for lack of a better word. Otherwise, yes, the r7 is an awesome body. Seriously don't understand Canons logic at all with their new crop sensor cameras if they're not releasing any lenses, and ESPECIALLY after their decision to not let third party companies make lenses for it. Horrible business decisions. Third party companies are literally the reason Sony is the king of mirrorless cameras atm. Any of the reps in B&H will tell you

Meh, you can get in to film making for a lot less than the new wonder camera lol. And yes, i own the R7.

It’s about time Canon gave us a CHOICE of rear LCD mechanism. The side hinged flippy flappy screen is rubbish, slow, obtrusive and conspicuous….and only for vloggers.
