More Laws on Separating Challah:

-Challah (with a blessing) should only be separated if at least 12 1/4 cups of flour is used. Many only recite a blessing if 16 1/2 cups of flour is used. Consult your rabbi.

-The challah should be separated before eating the bread from which it was taken. Many say it should be burnt as soon as possible, but it is not required to burn the challah before eating the bread.

-The challah and the bread from which it was taken should not be cooked together in the same oven.

-The burnt challah should be disposed of in a water-proof wrapping.

I'm not jewish (Korean american protestant guy in his 30s) but this video was beautiful. Who knew a loaf of bread had such a deeper spiritual meaning! The idea that you must pray into the bread so that it becomes sacred and holy when served at the Shabbat dinner was moving. I think the bread is a symbol for the bread of life, which is Gods provision. This video taught me that God wants us to work hard to harvest wheat during the work week but have a day to rest and observe God's day. I felt it was so deep for u to say that even if we give something our all and fail at something, that effort and intentionality is sufficient enough to God

This looks like a wonderful recipe.  Thanks so much.  I really enjoy your YouTube videos.  I'm a 'new' Jew (Grandmother was Jewish but my mother didn't practice) so I'm learning daily what it is to be a Jewish woman and your videos are excellent.

I loved your explanation about where challahs came from and the Mother daughter team was adorable.

I learned so much from this video. I'm a Pastry Arts student, we have this Bread Project to be presented in class, I choose Challah as my project. Can't wait to share the knowledge in class!

thanks! not only is it not against tradition, it is an obligation. it's just that the woman gets first preference to do the mitzvah, but if she's not around/able, then the man must do it. (it's an easy recipe - give it a go! :)

I make my own challah and I'm catholic and we eat it for Easter and I say my prayers on my bread as you do. I'm not Jewish but I respect your ways and also think its a good idea to say a prayer I say it for the family and those who need prayer, also the sick and the people who don't know they even need a prayer . God is God there is someone looking down on us God Bless us

I come from a Jewish father and a Christian mother. I'm a practicing Christian but I love learning about and connecting more with my Jewish heritage. Your videos are one of my favorite ways to do that! Thanks so much for making Judaism come alive! And of course that Challah looks delicious!

I would like to try baking a challah. I've watched several recipes. It was such a pleasure to hear you pronounce the "CH" properly and not as an "H". Most importantly this looks delicious and I can't wait to try it. I wish you and your family a good shabbat.

Reminds me of the wonderful days when my children were small and we made Challah every Friday for dinner after sunset....

This recipe was awesome! I've never made my own Challah before so i was greatly surprised by how well it worked out! I changed it up a little bit though. I left out the raisins and walnuts (sadly) and before I rolled them into cylinders I flattened the dough out, brushed with heavy cream and sprinkled in cinnamon sugar. I rolled them back up into cylinders and braided and baked the way you directed. This way I had cinnamon sugar on the inside as well as sprinkled on the outside. I even made glaze from butter and sugar. Next time I think I will add in the raisins too!

Never tried it with walnuts and raisins, so I think I will give this a try!

to honor my ancestor's and Jewish heritage, i'll be making some Jewish dishes during the next few weeks and next month. . I will try and make this challah recipe, and ask my mom or dad for my great grandmother's matzoh ball soup recipe.

Thank you so much for all the effort you have put into Jew in the City. I often recommend this to my friends as an example of a good Orthodox Jewish channel and also a sample of the Sephardic minhag. Are there any books you could recommend me to learn and understand more about the Sephardic minhag. I am an Arab but also fluent in Hebrew and can read it and enjoy studying different people. Thank you again for the excellent channel.

I'll try to get your challah into UT Austin's Challah for Hunger! It's amazing every week to see college age Jewish women getting to take on a new mitzvah. You really are changing the world!
