The need of using improved sensors to enable active safety and automated driving in future passenger vehicles has driven the industry towards exploring LiDAR. LiDAR is tested and proved to be a better sensor in terms of object detection and mapping which can also perform in low visibility conditions.

Concerning the extensive use of such a sensor on vehicles to enable automated driving, legislation have been passed in parts of North America in support of this technology in future vehicles. With the introduction of cost-effective and highly capable solid state LiDAR, wider acceptance of this sensor is expected to be witnessed.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan's Mobility research finds that LiDAR enabled passenger vehicle market earned revenue of around US $40 million in 2014 and estimates this to reach US $150 Million in 2021.
