Overutilization is defined as using a PPI for longer than the FDA-recommended time period of 4 to 8 weeks. To avoid rebound acid reflux the PPI should be gradually discontinued and supplemented with a histamine-2 receptor blocker (H2RA) e.g. ranitidine 400 mg per day, over the course of a month.

He never mentions how long you’re on the PPI or H2 blocker. How long until this heals gastritis?

He doesn't mention the knock-on effects of low stomach acid. It causes acid reflux as you need a level of acid to keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed. Also, low acid causes digestion problems as you need it to break down food, so you get slow digestion which causes bloating and abdominal pain. Low stomach acid also causes low absorption of vitamins and minerals and can cause anemia and lack of B vitamin absorption. Gastritis is almost impossible to cure as it is damage to the stomach lining, which can't be repaired.
