I remember when I wanted Mario Kart 64 for Christmas and my parents got me DKR instead because "The guy at the store said it was better". I was happy to get a new game and a present but disappointed at the same time as all my friends had Mario Kart. Once I popped the game in and started I was hooked on DKR and had a blast playing it! I had some friends try it and my friends all wanted DKR and were begging their parents for it.

I don't know who you are but thank you random person for suggesting this game! You were definitely right!

First off: DKR's use of nature, exploration, dinosaurs, adventure and racing was and is unmatched and so original it makes it one of the most memorable games of all time.

One of the staples of my childhood was reading the extra plot details in the instruction booklets on the ride home from buying a new game. Still bummed that went away.

That cancelled Donkey Kong Racing looks like it would have been awesome.

Loved this game as a kid! Timber was always my guy, partly because I adored tigers. And this is the first game I know of with transforming cars. Long before Sonic All-Stars did it. I think they went with hovercraft rather than boats just so you could still move it on land.
And I always wondered if there was a ditched mechanic of racers being knocked out of their vehicles? I mean we see that several times in the opening where they are running back to their cars.
And the deleted vehicle makes me wonder if they planned a new space vehicle for Wizpig's home tracks? I still would have loved to see the racers in tiny Arwings rather than the planes in the space levels.

miyamoto didn't tell rare to use diddy kong... miyamoto suggested they use nintendo characters, and rare chose diddy because it was their creation and felt more comfortable... to everyone's surprise miyamoto liked the idea and went with it... but miyamoto didn't suggest they straight up use diddy from the get go

One of the best parts about the the 2 Player Adventure code on was when it came to Silver Coin Challenges you could designate somebody to get them and have another guy intentionally be an enforcer to take out conventionally stronger racers so you can mess with the pole positions to ensure you could win comfortably after getting all the coins.

Greenwood Village was the bane of my existence but if you made sure racers like Diddy, Pipsy, or Tiptup didn't get close to first, it was a hell of a lot easier to manage.

Speaking of co-op in a Rare game, Jet Force Gemini allowing 2nd player to play as Floyd once you put him together was good fun especially since it was never bad to have somebody who had unlimited ammo and couldn't exactly die.

You know times changes when 800k copies sold within a month is enough to be in the Guiness World Records.

I want this guy to read this:
Corneria, fourth planet of the Lylat system. The evil Andross turned this once thriving system into a wasteland of near extinction. General Pepper of the Cornerian army was successful in exiling this manical scientist to the barren, deserted planet Venom.

I didn't know most of these and this was one of my favorite games as a kid.

Arguably the best game on the console.

Shame that Krunch was the only character that was flat out "bad". Because the DKR tracks prioritized tight turns more then straightaways, the lightweights always had a disproportionate advantage over the heavyweights. You didn't get enough of a chance to build up speed for higher top speeds to matter, so the Pipsy and Tiptup ended up having an unfair advantage with their fast acceleration and tight turning with car races, which were the most common. Their tight turns were almost a detriment in the hovercrafts, so that's when you'd want to use someone else.

All the Medium weight cahracters were broadly the same: medium enough that they were all solid. Banjo was the Viable heavyweight, as while his steering and accelartion were poorer then the lighter characters, they were usable enough that you had a chance to make use of his higher max speed. Krunch's steering is SOOO bad you needed ot use the breaks to make any turns.... and having the worst acceleration meant you were constantly slowing down. So him having the best max speed out of the original roster just didn't get a chance ot play out. And by the time you're good enough to make use of him, you've unlocked Drumstick, who's the same character but even FASTER with slightly better steering: Drumstick's steering was still BAD but still better then Krunch's. I think the game would've benefitted from making Weight have more of an impact: Heavy Characters took less to time recovery from attacks, and could knock other carts out of the weay w/o losing speed on impact, ect.

Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart. Rareware always went above and beyond on their projects and this game was no exception. It looks great, the soundtrack and effects sound great, it has infinite re-playability, and it still holds up to this day. Mario Kart is excellent but DKR just nails everything perfectly

The 'timetolose' code (harder AI) really does make a big difference. I timed the AI on a few courses with the code on vs off, and the AI finishes a whole 10 seconds faster on most courses with the code activated. It makes a big difference and is highly recommended if you're ever replaying this game.

I will always remember seeing the Banjo Kazooie Smash reveal. It was a hope 20 years in the making coming to fruition

Diddy Kong Racing is my favorite "kart" racing game, I've replayed it more than any other. It's genuinely fun, engaging, challenging and has decent variety of vehicle types.
