Japan does not even teach them about the atrocities they have done to other countries. My boyfriend’s friend married a Japanese woman and she had no idea most of the things Japan has done simply because she was never taught that. Makes you think what they teach at schools

Germany: We will make sure it will never happen again.

Japan: We will make sure it never happened.

I think it's telling how out of touch the Yasukuni Shrine
is when even Emperor Showa/Hirohito himself expressed great displeasure over Japanese war criminals being enshrined there and refused to visit it ever since. Which has been continued by his direct son and grandson Emperor Heisei/Akihito
and Emperor Reiwa/Naruhito.

And keeping in mind that Hirohito, Akihito and Naruhito are (according to Japanese ultranationalists) direct descendants of Amaterasu, that's a pretty big deal.

As a Filipino, this is kind of horrifying. In our classes, we were always taught about how brutal the Japanese occupation was in our country. So it's wild to see the opposite never addressed.

I don't know why there are so many Japanese nationalism apologists here. I suppose they must either be (ethno-)nationalists themselves, or hardcore weeaboos who think Japan can do no wrong

As a German who took Japanese in college in the US, I had a huge falling out with my Japanese teacher over this issue.
We never spoke again.

As a Vietnamese, we might forgive but never forget the 1945 starvation

I'm German and we learn a lot about our country's past in school and am happy that we are not being blinded and ofc we are not proud of it but we try to honor the innocent people of our crimes instead of just trying to blind our people into thinking we never did anything wrong

(we even have a whole day dedicated to it were we Honor them and show them and their still remaining relatives respect)

its also disappointing to hear that many Japanese were taught that Korea was uncivilized and that the Japanese occupation did them a favor. there are even some recent anime that subtly (or not so subtly) portray Korea as the bad guys

edit: guess I should have expected the colonization fans in the replies :/

A comfort women statue was taken down in my country, the Philippines, for the exact same reason. Whats even worse was that there were still living comfort women victims when it happened... The disrespect

Once old people stop ruling Japan, it'll change this aspect, which is one of the most criticized about that country. You can see very informed young people in many videos talking about how weird it is for Japan to not teach and recognize this theme correctly.

I’m vietnamese. My grandmother refuses to even step foot in japan because her mother and sisters were forced to be comfort women, and obviously they never got compensation. Every time we go to Viet Nam, she pays to take the longer flights simply because she hates Japan

I had family members who still remember disgusting acts that were committed by the Japanese during WW2, my great grandmother was r*ped by a Japanese soldier in nanjing when she was 12 years old, miraculously survived and conceived with countless injuries and resulting mental illness from the atrocities she witnessed and suffered. Her own parents were murdered, her own mother whom was pregnant at the time was st*bed by a spear through the belly and the unborn fo*tus was stuck into the ground like a display. Her father was subject to a sword game, where they would try to sl*ce as many pieces of him before he passed. I practice Buddhism and within the teachings I try to remain mindful and let go of anger, but often times it is very difficult. I plead that people will read this and realise the true extent of malevolence and violence that many suffered under Japanese imperialism and that this piece of history shall not be forgotten

Japan unalived more than 1 million Filipinos during the 3 years of colonialism in our country. No hate, but this is why it’s very hard for me to feel sorry for what happened to them at the end of ww2.

The worst thing is that Japan is now trying to get these statues of the comfort woman demolished. Even the comfort woman statue in Berlin is now in danger of demolishion. They literally got the Berlin Mayor to issue a statement about this, which is immensely shocking. If you look it up you should be able to find the article. We are taking to the streets here in Berlin in order to raise awareness and get the government to leave the statue alone. If you are in Berlin or plan to visit, and this is something you are about, please join the demonstrations as well

You cant progress as a country if you dont acknowledge your past mistakes. Shame.

As a german, there are a lot of things I think are going wrong in my country, but the dedication to historical self-reflection really is something to be proud of.

We, who walk after, must ensure that something so horrific never happens again.
