You know the second term in terms of the first (as you have to double the previous number and subtract 4) so b = 2a - 4. You also know the third term, c, in terms of b as again you double b and subtract 4. Hence c = 2b - 4. Then notice that the examiner wants a formula for c with a terms in it. So as c = 2b - 4 and b = 2a - 4 we can substitute b in terms of a in to get c = 2(2a-4) - 4 which when we expand we get c= 4a - 12 and when we factorise we get c = 4(a-3) as required. Hope helps.
