This Tiny Full Frame Camera Is Wild

The Sigma fpL is the world's smallest full frame mirrorless camera, and to say it's unconventional would be an understatement. To test it out, I took this pocket rocket with me on a recent trip to the Canadian Rockies to find out weather it's the perfect travel photography tool, or just an expensive gimmick.

I had two Sigma Cameras. They are the most infuriating, slow and complicated to use cameras on the planet, but when you get a good shot and the camera actually wrote it to the card, the results were breathtaking. I sold them all but still have hope they come out with a modern foveon sensor camera one day.

I own an FP-L, but I have converted the fixed rear screen to a flippable screen using a kit from China. Excellent

I've owned an fpL and used it exclusively for landscape photography since 2021. I think this is a VERY fair review of the camera - it has good points and it has not so good, but as you mentioned EVERY camera system out there also has points like this (they'll be different and personal to each of us). I'd really like to see Sigma to promote this camera more because it has so much potential. An excellent review Tom.

Hi Tom… I have an Fpl, I’ve added a flip screen, battery grip that allowed me shoot for 2 days with one battery, the grip is comfortable and takes the awkwardness out of holding the camera. I use a Peake design wrist strap only and walk around all day with no fatigue. Because of the flip screen I have not needed to add EVF I use my Leica M lenses and my Sigma contemporary lenses on it . I’ve shot thousands of images in all kinds of scenarios…No complaints. Of course all cameras have their idiosyncrasies one just has to get used to them. my leicas don’t get out as much as they used to😁

Every time I see small interchangeable lens camera I think I want, it's always more than double what I'd be willing to spend.

I luv mine. I have the 16-28, 28 to 70, lumix 70-300 - with a TTArtisan 50mm as my walkabout lens. The form factor is my favorite feature - almost M43 kit size. Dynamic range is so over the top don’t even miss flash opportunities. Surprised you didn’t mention its limitations when it comes to Flash photography - it would have given you an opportunity to discuss its in-camera backlighting features. And ISO 6 - mind blowing option within the camera.

You can get a good LOG profile out of this camera in a very specific way. I think this camera is really best suited for video work given it's rig-ability and video output. You can attach an Atomos recorder via HDMI and record 4K, 12bit, Prores Raw. The Atomos is capable of real time converting the Raw output from the camera to Panasonic V-Log. Final Cut has a "Modify Prores Raw Settings" option and you can do a Raw to Log conversion with the click of a button... giving you the ability to grade in a standard Log workflow.
I think if your interested in getting exceptional 24p, 4K video with Raw flexibility at an affordable price... get the OG fp second hand and rig it out with a battery and Atomos recorder. You won't be disappointed.

Brought my regular fp on a trip to Hawaii for stills. The size and weight, when coupled with a reasonable lens, are just insane for such a diminutive camera with a FF sensor. I really hope they continue the line when global shutters are more accessible.

I own a sigma fp paired with a 24 - 70 sigma art, only downside is the occasional banding with the stills on cheap led lights
I use the camera on weddings, documentaries, on gimbals and handheld
couldnt be happier with the image quality

I’ve had an fp for three years and, it’s just another camera in my kit. I was never in a “should I get this one or that one” situation. When the fp came out, I replaced a Leica Q with the fp. The fp has Japanese build quality, is diminutive in size, is in the L-Mount alliance, and uses the same battery as the Q. I can shoot a lot of lenses on this camera including Leica S, L and M; Voigtlander M; and Sigma L. I use it predominately for stills, and it excels quite nicely in that capacity. There is a “get to know me factor” with the fp, but isn’t that true of all cameras? That shot of the guy that you took with the rolling shutter never happens. If I want to take fast moving action shots, I reach for another camera. However, it is possible to get some action shots if you know what works and what doesn’t. Overall, it’s a great camera to add to your bag(s), and the photos that it produces are excellent.

Still want an FP L. I shoot video on two Sigma FP bodies and one Panasonic S1H. When I use an fp as a stills camera I toss a small lens on and can put it in a jacket pocket or cargo pocket easy. Something I super love with my L mount caneras is a EF to L adapter that has a VND built in, and i adapt old lenses like the helios 44 and other soviet glass. The L is just so fun as a tiny power house, and batteries are cheap since it uses the same battery the Lumix G7 and similar cameras.

I had that FP-L but sold it and replaced by a Lumix S5IIX for these reasons :
- EVF was a pain in the *** to attach on the body and cam would be bulky with this EVF
- Battery drain was too fast
- Bad autofocus
- Menus were quite complicated and not user-friendly
- No IBIS
- No flip screen
- No tropicalisation

BUT... when it worked... wow images were stunning !

28-70 DG DN is the obvious companion for this camera. I got one last year for my S5iiX and it's a brilliant travel zoom.

I love mine. The images and video are amazing, and it's half the size of the Canon(s) I've dragged around on backpacking trips for landscape shots.

The #1 reason I'm looking at the Sigma FP L is to use it with that Sirui Saturn 35mm 1.6x anamorphic lens, when when center cropped on the FP/FP L turns into 87mm. This allows you to use one lens to film almost everything because the downside of this lens turns into a home run. Sure the Saturn is clinically sharp and doesn't have chromatic aberrations that move your eye to the center like the Blazar Remus, but it's too hard to add VFX with those kinds of lenses so the Saturn is actually better for virtual production.

I now have the sudden urge to stretch myself thin on a credit card to obtain this magic camera that I have never heard of before now! This looks like such an AMAZING filmmaking rig setup meets (borderline) medium format level photo camera! This thing seems RAD! If only the lens selection was a bit better... OR if you could shoot Sony Emount lenses with it.

As a semi-rabid Sigma FP fan. I can't always give good reasons for my obsession, especially in light of other cameras in the same price range. To be honest, I just love the little thing, and I think I get some satisfaction shooting with a camera a lot of other people have dismissed.
