CinemaDNG 16Bit Raw video that Blackmagic/Sigma FP provides.
Essentially raw photos.

I’m glad you cleared up the RAW video with Canon. I used to shoot Boxing. So hard to get the KO punch on the chin. I bought Canon because you could shoot the Video at high frame rate and pull out the frame with the punch on the button.

Explaining bit depth as the amount of information in a frame is quite a shortcut I think. It is down to what happens in each pixel of the sensor, how light is converted into a digital value (from dark to bright).

Bit depth is the number of values that the pixels in your image can be. It's like a ladder from dark to bright. More bit depth means more bars in the ladder, so more ability to distinguish close intensities.

For example, take 2 neighbour pixels in an image with a very close brightness. Coding them in 8-bit, (i.e. they can take 256 intensity values) say their respective value are 128 and 128. In 10-bit (1024 levels), they are more bars in the ladder and they get coded 512 and 513, so 2 different values!

Anthony is right in that you'll get more information as you managed to separate close intensities that would have been mixed forever!

It's also the fact that video frames aren't processed the way photographs are, not even close. You can do a lot of crazy good processing when taking a photo, but video doesn't have a lot of those capabilities, otherwise we'd be recording exclusively videos and pulling individual frames to use as stills.

But even if you shoot raw video, it's going to be a pain in the ass to edit and store all that footage for most people

Great explanation, I had an idea but didn't know the facts behind it

"One good reason why not to shoot videos using photos is the picture quality is better".

There's also the buffer, you can shoot just for few seconds before you fill the buffer

Not only but depth, but you also can get higher resolution when taking photoes if your camera has at least more than 8mp

Key thing to remember: 14b is not 1.4x more information than 10b, it's 8x more! each additional bit doubles the number of values that can be recorded

Strange to flex the raw video. But the bit depth is still greater in photos though also why would you need to shoot and more than 1 frame. Unless your trying to capture a lot of action

the real reason is the buffer my friend, when the buffer fills you have to let it flush

Umm even if we can shot video that has comparable bit depth of a photo it still doesn’t make any sense because of motion blur.

No. 10 bits are for every pixel. A bit is a single 1 or 0

Why not shoot a video with continuous shooting

You can try this in Instagram
Post a photo from your gallery as a story
Then post again the same photo with a music song which turn the story into a video and lose quality
