Such a depressing film. I love that it gives you mixed feelings about the Bardot and Sami Frey characters.

The problem with Brigitte Bardot is that she was the most beautiful and sexy woman of her generation, and probably of any generation, and what this means is that all her films, including this one, are understandably and inevitably dominated by her beauty and natural sexuality, and are vehicles for that. The plots here and elsewhere are all subordinate to this, and also here there is little depth of characterisation or veracity in the central relationship despite the fine performances from Bardot and the ensemble cast, because everything becomes a footnote to her beauty and sexual freedom, despite the attempt to cast the film as genuine art. It is like putting a dazzling goddess amongst humans and expecting everyone and everything to be normal; it is not, and the audience are both blinded by the beauty, and left empty by what surrounds it. Having said that, it is a film that is well worth a watch despite the only verité being Bardot's beauty.
