Fischer single handedly beat the Russian machine in it's prime. An entire superpower on one side, Bobby on the other. His psychological techniques were as brilliant as his chess. He made Boris Spasky a life long supporter and fan, even in his very dark days. Imagine that. That feat should make him one of the greatest GOATS in multiple categories, not just chess.

Nobody can beat Fischer's demolition job accomplishments against top players in the world. It's not actually the skills but the personality that amazes me about him. He will not readily accept a draw like the rest of the players. His game is beyond the chess board. He wants to beat the opponent's will to win.

Bobby Fischer is still to this day the best chess player in history in my opinion.

Chess board has 64 squares and coincidentally Fischer passed away at the age of 64. It seems like each year of his life represents each number of square on the board of chess. That man was inseparable from chess. What a legend! 🐐

The thing about Fischer is he basically did his own analysis and prep. In the candidates matches he beat two GMs 6-0. Don’t get me wrong, I love Kasparov. Also Carlsen is the goat imo. But Carlens peak of 2882 was 67 elo points ahead of Aronian. Fischer was 125 Elo points ahead of the next highest rated player, Spassky at his peak.

Chess grandmasters of this era are just product of computer chess. Not unlike during Bobby Fischer's, he just rellied on books and on his pure God-given Chess knowledge and skills. He' still is, and wil remain to be the GREATEST CHESS GENIUS ever!!!

Fischer, like Ruth, Ali, and Jordan, had the “it” factor. You could argue that there are/were better players in their sport, but what set them apart was their charisma and their media appeal outside of the arena. Magnus, Kasparov, and other greats may have just as many or more accomplishments, but they lack the personality, wit and charm that Fischer had. Love him or hate him, he always managed to draw attention away from the board. His magnetism and style transcended the chess world. The same cannot be said for Magnus and the other chess greats.

There's something romanticized about a titan, a player who was eccentric, creative and really just loved the game to its core, who at the pinnacle of his career when he was clearly #1, just walks away.

American players are just always gonna be more famous regardless. Not to take away from anything fischer has done, but carlsen and kasparov would likely be as famous if they were americans

From age 23, Fischer would win every match or tournament he completed for the rest of his life. Any other chess player can say that? Oh, also, they changed how they calculate ratings to make them higher today.

I think that there is an analogy between Bobby Fischer's fame, despite Chess not having mainstream popularity, and Van Cliburn's fame, despite classical music not having mainstream popularity: it's all about the Cold War.
