iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Problem With USB-C Power For External SSD Storage Drives

I forgot to make it clear in the video that this issues only applies to the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, as the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus can't record ProRes 4K 120FPS. Sorry about that.

In this video I'm talking about the USB-C power problem that can happen with certain USB-C SSD storage devices connected to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The issue is that with the 4.5W power limit of these iPhones when powering external devices. This power availability will not allow certain SSD drives to work. In my tests all combinations of USB-C NVMe enclosures and Thunderbolt NVMe enclosures using a Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSDs, would not work during to the power limit.

In my opinion, Apple could have preempted this problem by allowing higher power delivery for such SSD drives. Given that it would not be unreasonable to suggest that for anyone recording high bitrate ProRes 4K 120FPS video to already be using Gen 4 NVMe based SSD drives.

Here's some links to the video I mentioned and others that you may find interesting:

links to the Samsung T7 and other peripherals:

This SSD is the fastest I have put together so far for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It also works great with all iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models. it is made up form two parts. A USB-C to NVMe enclosure by Sabrent and a 1TB Samsung SSD980 M.2 NVMe Gen 3 SSD.

Here are some cases and peripherals that I have used with my iPhone 16 Pro Max and would recommend.

Aurora ArmorAir case by Benks. Here's the links for those, if buying direct form Benks use my discount code - David15 - for a 15% discount

Thank you for another useful video. Do you think that using an external power supply with the Gen 4 would get round the problem ? I need to use external power if I want to use a Samsung T7 with my 13 Pro.

Thank you David, but the iphone 15 pro and pro max has the exakt same problem don't they? I tried certain combinations with my iphone 15 pro and they display the same inability to connect to certain external USB drives, hinting to the exakt same power limitation for them also.

You are doing great work - your info is solid - Gen 3 SSD is the way to go 😅

Great informative video! I have a Samsung 970 EVO 1TB - will this be sufficient for recording 4K ProRes at 120 FPS?

It's not a problem, it's an intended limitation. Why waste almost 5 minutes until actually explain what could be a maximum 3 minute video?

I will be trying my 990 Pro 2TB SSD with a Ugreen 20Gbps ugreen enclosure tomorrow. With and without a hub that supports PD power delivery 3.0. Maybe that helps to power the drive idk let’s see maybe that wattage limit is separate or not idk.

If I use a hub and connect an external battery to my camera rig will I solve the aforementioned problem?

Hi David can i use crucial X9 pro ssd with iphone 16 pro max for data backups n data sharing to my windows laptop?

Sounds like a problem with the SSD's and not iPhone. Just find the right SSD

Using a gen4 ssd for an iPhone that can only offer 10Gbps is, for lack of a better word, stupid. There are other solutions for this that works on the 4.5W envelope, which will saturate the port speed and more energy efficient.
