I love the topic, because of how often it shows up in hobby discussions. But "Old Tank Syndrome" is total and utter B.S.. As you said, it's throwing in the towel on failing to understand the specific reason an older system failed.
There are dozens of reasons a tank can fail: chemistry, biology, husbandry, & technology can all cause failures. But there is no one "syndrome" dealing with the aquariums age.

If you are doing meticulous maintenance like you and some other reefers do, everything always cleaned, then old tank syndrome never occurs. If you are not doing that, and if you don’t clear detritus out of rocks or have some way that sand bed is being maintained then OTS can occur. The rest is just equipment failure.
