---------- II ----------

I am Simon, a fourth year physics student at St. Peter's College, University of Oxford. I try my best to help applicants to Oxbridge with answers from the other side of the fence and, where possible, make videos that people will find useful.

One of my favorite books that I read last year was "The Noble Gases" by Asimov. It basically tells the story of how the noble gases were discovered and why it was so difficult to do so.

I would recommend any Neil deGrasse Tyson book for the social aspects of science, but for a truly fascinating story i would read Higgs by Jim Baggot ... Its a sensational read!

I recommend ''The Universe: A Biography'' by John Gribbin. It was such a great book!

Wow, Simon, thank you for all those books. I have been rather bored reading textbooks all the time... These are just the sort of recommendations I have been waiting for!! Thank you!!

Man, I've been following your videos for several years now. Somehow, I missed this one, which I find absolutely wonderful for a non-science guy like me. Of course, all of those sound like books I would like to read, and I have only read Feinman's book so far..loved it.
What stood out to me is how young you look in this video, don't worry, I'm still decades older than you are, so you'll never see how I have aged, too! ;-)

0:43 A little correction here, you should've said Einstein instead of Newton here.

I know its already 8 years bht I thought it would still be helpful. Cheers!

I've recently read '1984 spring: a choice of futures'. Even though it's writen a while ago, his predictions of the future of human kind are freakishly accurate. Like his predictions on mobile phones he says "Portable radiophones...via the convenient satellite, these will provide voice, telex, video facilities, still photos and live TV coverage. As these units become cheaper, smaller and more universal, they will make travellers totally independant of national communications systems."

Thanks for the recommendations Simon, I've had a book voucher for ever now I know what to use it on!! :) I highly recommend The Trouble with Physics - Lee Smolin, again a history of physics from Newton all the way to present date, focusing on the big physics revolutions in each period, leading up to a detailed explanation on string theory :) fascinating work and really gets you thinking too :) Thanks for the vlog, man good to see you're keeping the channel going :)

I'm being a bit unkind - I think he's brilliant (as well as his science, if not his morals sometimes) but I don't rate his lectures on physics as the supreme educational resource, like some people do! I think they can be a little self-indulgent, and wonderful if you already know the science but not necessarily so if you are approaching a subject for the first time.

An Imaginary Tale: The Story of i, Dr Euler's Fabulous Formula: Cures Many Mathematical Ills, Mrs Perkins's Electric Quilt and Other Intriguing Stories of Mathematical Physics, all by Paul J. Nahin. And more. Literally, every one of his books is great. Read'em.
