Using SEGREGATION to beat high scores in All Quiet Roads!

All Quiet Roads 4743 is a game heavily inspired by Mini Metro and Mini Motorways, developed by a single person, but brimming with addictive and fun gameplay! As I was a highway engineer for a decade, it seemed like a great game for me to try out and see how it compares to real life! This is part 3 where I use segregation to beat high scores and discover the secret of why AQR 4743 uses that number!

About All Quiet Roads 4743:

Build roads between various neighborhoods. Congested roads turn amber and then red as traffic slows down. Build more roads. Add cloverleafs, ferries, bridges, and tunnels, getting all your vehicular traffic to where it needs to go.

A vehicle trip is completed when a vehicle reaches its desired destination. Each completed trip adds to your raw score. The raw score is the count of the number of vehicle trips completed. Additionally, your All Quiet Roads score ( AQR ) updates to your current raw score only if there are no roads currently in a red warning state. Your raw score will continue accumulating but it will not become an AQR score until the moment when no roads are red. Red roads can be noisy as motorists honk their horns. All the roads are all quiet only when no roads are red.

All Quiet Roads 4743 is somewhat unique in allowing players to manage traffic on roads that turn red, just like realtime maps we use on real world roads. Red roads are dangerous, because as traffic backs up it will eventually cause neighborhoods to become jammed. When the neighborhood can no longer hold any more newly spawning vehicles the game is over.

"I want to try a bit of segregation" -RCE 2022

you need to give more alternate options since everyone is going onto 1 central highway which causes problems late game

I wonder if halfway through the game you could delete the whole layout and redo the whole map now that you know what buildings are where. Then you could make a giant round about to divert traffic. Would also be cool if they added a city planner icon that lets you move an item like the airport or stadium to a different part of the map.

Does anyone else want to see RCE play geoguessr and see how often he gets distracted? Probably a bridge review overload.

More priority needs to be given to the rare locations like the school, hospital and airports.
Less priority should be given to circles and triangles since there all over the map.

Since RCE was playing the Rio level and since he mentioned that in some countries the drivers in the circulatory bit of the roundabout give way to who’s coming in, I’ll add that here in Brazil there are some roundabouts with traffic lights to regulate who gives way to whom. Obviously, this completely defeats the point of the roundabout.

In all these traffic games, I have occasionally found it useful to (if the game allows) just delete all the roads and recreate everything from scratch. At that point, things like segregation and problem points suddenly become much more easy to implement (or, at least, to identify).

as someone with a WA license plate who now lives very far out of state that easter egg made me so happy & nostalgic <3

My qualifying exams are in a month and I'm addicted to mini metro. The fact you have shown me this game exists has put me in a precarious position where I want to buy it and play it for hours. But needs over wants. Please continue to make these videos so I can live my engineering joy precariously through you.

Tries to use segregation.
2 minutes later.
Abandons segregation and orders spaghetti again.

Complete honesty, you have amazing charisma and you make engineering very understandable and interesting, you should be a teacher irl

I feel like you could make good use of Ferry Terminals by making routes to unique/rare locations like the airport and stadium

I love how he did a bridge review for a 2d bridge going directly to a school

the airport symbol on the road looks like a X-Wing, so we have proper X-Wings v Tie Fighters on the roads

I believe the solution once you hit that unfixable congestion point is to step back and re-evaluate the network as a whole and try to redesign it from a more logical perspective. The airport and stadium were your main congestions, so having more than one route dedicated to them would have been a major step towards fixing it. All of your highways stopped working when their demand became too high, then everything else clogged up at the same time. More entrances, less intersections.

In essence, it's a fractal funnel. Start with as many arms as you can from the core areas and move to slower routes as you spiderweb out. Two or three highways with minimal intersections and localized roads to "hotspots", like a square to circle road with no through lines. One dedicated cloverleaf highway to the school with one or two smaller entrances for the lower "local" demand. Using roundabouts only on local/low demand areas would help.

0:19 no wait that’s still just Mini Motorways, you should have said “it’s like Mini Motorways but you have to engineer the noise away and there’s TIE fighters”
