Ukraine war: Kyiv accuses Russia of destroying Nova Kakhovka dam

A mass emergency evacuation of thousands of people is under way in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson.

The area is being submerged after the Nova Kakhovka dam was busted overnight, releasing a deluge of water from Ukraine's largest reservoir.

The Ukrainians say the Russians, who control the dam, destroyed it, something the Russians deny.

It is not the first time the dam has come under attack but it is now thought to be beyond repair with potentially catastrophic consequences for anyone or anything living downstream.

That is a nightmare, all those wild animals, they have their babies that clearly could not escape. Not to mention fishing and agriculture and simply water supply for surrounding big cities, Kherson, Mykolaiv...

Russian could just open the floodgates anytime Ukrainian army try to cross the river since they were in control of the dam. After the flood subsided, Ukrainian can cross the river without further risk of Russian opening the floodgates while they are crossing the river. More importantly, the river upstream will be lowered and easier to cross.

The thought of mines being dislodged is so scary. Even if the Russians were doing the bare minimum of mapping where they laid mines, that's all gone now, and civilians will suffer the consequences as per usual

It is quite obvious from the photos & videos. . it has breached in at least 2 diffecent places & they are very wide breaches. . so this could not have been a result of shelling (small damage in one spot if a lucky hit) or a natural break (again, it would have happened in one place, not both sides of the generator building) . . must have been mined along its length & blown in one go.

The feasibility of blowing up the dam to raise river levels to slow the Russians advance was discussed in the Washington Times some months ago. Tests were even conducted. It then happens…..and NATO blames Russia 😅

Well, Russia deliberately allowed the water level to build up to maximum, because they controlled the sluices.
So "failure" or explosion - Russia maximised the consequences of dam burst.
