Feeding organ meat to dogs, especially liver, can offer a wealth of health benefits but must be done with caution. In this video, Dr. Andrew Jones breaks down the risks and benefits of feeding organ meat to your dog, focusing on how to safely introduce liver into their diet. Liver is rich in nutrients, including vitamin A, iron, and B vitamins, but it’s important to feed it in moderation to avoid toxicity.

Dr. Jones explains how to start small by offering ½ teaspoon of liver twice a week, ensuring it doesn’t exceed 5–10% of your dog’s overall diet. He also highlights the importance of choosing the right liver, recommending pasture-raised chicken liver over beef liver for its higher quality. Learn how to prepare liver by boiling it gently for 5 minutes and how to serve it in ways that your dog will love, whether chopping, blending, or dehydrating for a new texture.

Understanding the proper way to introduce liver into your dog's diet can improve their health, boost their energy levels, and provide key nutrients. Watch now for expert advice on how to safely feed liver to your dog and ensure they thrive!

My dog passes away 2 years ago and I still watch this channel. If we had more vets like Dr Jones, our beloved pets would love much longer !

I cook food for my boy ones in two weeks. 10 pounds of raw beef, 7 pounds of cooked turkey, 10 pounds of cooked pork, 2 pounds of beef liver and 2 pounds of beef heart. Serving with broccoli, green beans and cucumber. This diet helped me to get rid of all allergie symptoms.

I have been cooking for my cavapoo for years. He’s 9 now. No health issue. Cleared ear mites, tear stains etc. I use beef shank, lean ground turkey, smelts ( whole fish with bone for calcium), carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, okra, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, eggs, flax seeds, millet; chicken heart or beef heart. And I add bah choy if I happen to have it. I cook all the meet and root veggies in instant pot; and add fish and other chopped veggies in the end. Cook lightly for a few mins. He is healthy. Food has No preservatives. I freeze the food in small containers. Cook once last 3 weeks. And I know the quality is guaranteed.

My two dogs eat beef liver …they get about 1 TBS. About twice a month…mix it into their homemade dog food. They are doing well!

So happy I saw this!!!! I have been feeding my two dogs way too much liver😢. They love it, but now it will be only two times a week instead of everyday and smaller amounts as well. Thank you once again, my favorite animal doctor ever!❤

My farmer friend had two cows processed so he gave me both livers and hearts. I freeze dried all of it. My dogs get a tiny bit each day.

Calf liver is also available at Walmarts in the States, if liver from a younger animal is less likely to be overloaded with toxins. The price is only a little more than beef liver.

My dog is now on 100% homemade dog food mostly because of your videos! I'm watching this just to make sure my current knowledge about this topic is correct... Thanks! ❤

I’ve been feeding Raw to my dogs and cats for over 20 years now. I definitely feed organ meat. As many different organs as I can get a hold of. But I do make sure that I do not overdo the liver.

I have been pressure canning chicken liver for Murphy and adding to his mix for 4 years. I used to use them, chicken heart/gizzards, beef liver, and calf hearts. Labor of love, for sure. Now, it is primarily ground beef, turkey, bone in chicken, London broil, pork, and salmon/tuna and of course those chicken livers! He gets a nice variety every month. Nothing is perfect, but I enjoy the education in your videos. Thank you! Murphy is an intact, 4.5 year old male cocker spaniel. So far, so good! Peace

Thank you for the this, Dr. Jones! I usually serve chicken or beef livers every month or a bit more when my older dogs need a boost of nutrition. I'll pay attention much more carefully to the amounts and sources. I feed mine lamb, organic chicken, venison, nilgai, turkey, wild caught salmon and fish we catch plus carrots, black or blue berries, celery, cucumber, apple, parsley, cilantro, thyme, bone broth and coconut oil. The veggies vary with season but I always start them off with home made yogurt and colostrum every morning and good multivitamins plus milk thistle for the older ones. I'm no expert but I try the best I can by my pups. My oldest dogs passed at 20 and 19. My oldest cat is 17. Your channel has helped me enormously in caring for my dogs and cats and I will forever be indebted to you for sharing your knowledge and compassion. Wish all vets shared your ethics and standards. ❤

Thank you so much. Your acknowledging “Mistakes” (OMG!! We’re all human, who knew!? 😅) helps our mental health not only the physical health of our pups but via our mental health theirs too!!!! And actually lower stress for us and therefore for pups is ALSO great or their physical health. Thank you so much and i wish more on-line content folk had your humility and integrity and in my wise old age i only really trust folks once I’ve seen them admit to “Mistakes”/ask the ability to learn from experience and the humility and compassion and bravery to share that with others.

I fried my pups beef liver in high grade olive oil just enough so it’s still tender. I comes out so good I’d eat it and I always hated liver. That gets fed as a snack between getting big home cooked meals. It keeps my rough collie real fluffy and healthy and he’s now ten.

So very helpful. I have some beef liver and chicken livers in my crockpot while watching you today. It also has some chicken thighs, sweet potatoes, green beans, turkey broth and rice. I have 2 girls that are 50-60 lbs and my little ChaCha that weight about 10-12 lbs. so after watching your lesson today, I will mix it all really well, spread it to about 1” think in my very large cookie sheets, freeze, and cut it into 1” square ‘cookies. Let the big girls split 1 1” square and give the little girl ~ a teaspoon 1x/ daily. They will be due their yearly check up next month (march) and will ask the vet to check liver enzyme levels. So that I’ll have an idea if all is well.
Thanks so much Doc! ❤️

I am on the carnivore diet for myself - over a year with great success. I do take organ meat supplements for myself, so I sometimes sprinkle some of it for my dogs.

As I am in Australia, I feed my dog kangaroo. Less protein for him which he is sensitive too and can upset his stomach. He also gets salmon once a week.
