Jason. As a newcomer who's taking his foundation license in November I've spent every evening the last 3 weeks trying to get my head around repeaters & hot spots, and you just nailed them so thank you. I used AM/FM/SSB back in the late 70's and early 80s so this time warp is hard for someone like me to understand and you laid it down beautifully.
One thing that does puzzle me and I'm guessing many newcomers feel the same way is sourcing groups or rooms. Is it that you just look around and find groups you get on with or is there some way of sourcing them by interest? Or am I completely missing the mark with all this?

I like the idea of my HT being used around my office without consuming a ton battery power with it trying to get out to the local repeaters.

I have a good one for you... I have a number of projects and work is taking up a lot of my nights but if you wanted too take a little time and put a quick vid together that shows how to setup the hotspot (pi-zero) to allow a Yaesu 991a to do DMR via the YSFTODMR and vice versa features that would be very helpful. I am told this can be done....

I use an OPENSPOT2 and a Yaesu FT70 . C4FM digital voice on 440 to the Openspot2. It links via wifi (usally my phones hotspot) to DMR Talkgroups online or to YSF Reflectors. Thoe DMR TG and YSF Reflectors are often connected to repeaters around the world as well as other digital groups online SW Washington while mobile to ther DX3L and a Manila philippines net is common.

New to ham radio... trying to get APRS and DMR up and running. I just got an Anytone 878+ and I am trying to get it up and running. I live in rural WV and have realized I am going to need to get a hotspot. This was good to help me better understand some of the hotspot terminology and what to look for. I am looking at multiple timespots, ethernet & wifi capable... what are some other things that I need to be looking for?
