i think the genre is called citypop. But i love the music from japan in the 70s-90s, it fits so well with the old style imagery of anime back then too. It all makes me imagine a pre 2000 japan megacity where anything is possible yet people are living the same day everyday. The only moment of joy is going out at night, maybe with a girl or friends, and just taking in the atmosphere of a city filled with lights, sounds, smells, and not thinking about tomorrow.
Citypop has a way of closing a moment in time from the future, really making everything seem so... present.
