We know the bread stays bread because the apostle Paul told the Church they are eating bread. "For whenever you eat this BREAD and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes." (1 Corinthians 11 : 26)

We know Jesus was using a metaphor when describing the liquid in the cup as his blood because right afterward he calls it wine by describing it as "fruit of the vine". Here is the passage :

"Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this FRUIT OF THE VINE from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26 : 27 - 29)

Jesus even taught in John 6 that the flesh counts for nothing!

"The Spirit gives life; *the flesh counts for nothing.* The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life." (John 6 : 63)

Read it again. Jesus taught that eating his flesh counts for nothing. He was using metaphors to teach them that they were to put their trust in him. The same passage shows Jesus saying, "Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life." (John 6 : 47)

The Catholic church has the Nicodemus mentality of messing up the words of Jesus. Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus asked, “How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus spoke using physical events/things to point people to spiritual realities. Catholicism is hung up on trying to bring cannibalism into the gospel instead of telling people to trust in Jesus 100%.

Eternal life is a gift from God. Anytime we try to add any work/ritual/sacrament to the gospel then it is no longer a gift God is giving us. It becomes a payment for our action and therefore is no longer the true gospel of Jesus.

If our salvation was dependent on what we do, then we would lose it 100% of the time. We would be messing it up all the time, but if we put 100% of the responsibility in the hands of Jesus, then he will save us 100%. God's word on this is 100% reliable. This is how we know we have eternal life. We give it ALL over to Jesus who promises eternal life to those who trust only in him.
