The pine beetle (or a very similar relative) is hard on Sweden too. A warming climate is letting them spread over new areas, but the main reason for this timber industry disaster is the way trees are farmed these days. The beetles naturally feed on dead or very old trees. But with the "modern" way of speed-farming trees, all the trees are the same age, and with that the beetle adapted to it´s environment. Now they eat what they´re served, so to speak.

Also, one should even hesitate to call a modern tree-farming area a forest in the traditional sense. There are seldom much life there other than the farmed trees.
