Before playing Jason Bourne, Matt Damon was the Private Ryan, it's funny how he's young!

Hi everyone! What grade (out of 10) would you give this video?

Fun fact: Matt Damon was cast because he was relatively unknown at the time the film started filming, but Good Will Hunting was released a few months earlier in 1997 and he was a big star by the time SPR released in theaters. Talk about perfect timing lol.

The line about “with the only brothers I have left, and there was no way I was going to desert them” was just outstanding.

Matt Damon’s acting here is so good. His quiet crying and heartbreak is powerful.

The way he asks for the names of the men who died to find him…….

Tom Hanks absolutely nailed the role of Captain Miller one of the most believable actors that have played a soldier, because it was literally men just like him that got drafted or enlisted. Farm boys, school teachers, husbands, fathers and men who lived modest and humble lives.

What I love about this scene is it really shows the amazing character and integrity Ryan has. Throughout the whole journey the team and us have wondered if this Ryan is worth the lives of Wade and Carpazo. When we finally do see Ryan we can tell he is a man of honor and is loved by his men. The team also sees this too and though they don't say it you can see on their faces they respect the man despite who they have lost.

17 years later.
Tom Hanks: this time, he should find a way home from Mars. I'm not going.

Adds more gravity to the captain's final words later on of "Earn it". Ryan's demand to stay cost even more lives than the two that died while looking for him.

The line: "I was with the only brothers that I have left" is so powerful. It gives me chills and makes me tear up every time.

What makes this scene so powerful is that they all assume that Ryan will be entitled and happy to go home. It also contrasts with the other "Private Ryan" who freaked out when they mistakenly told him his brothers were dead. The acting's great, but the scene works because it upends the viewer's expectations.

Can you imagine being in Ryan's place at this moment. Surviving the stresses of combat up to this point and then being confronted with the horrendous news you lost all your other brothers in combat. I would just absolutely die on the spot!!

1:22 That's one of my favorite parts of the movie, the way Ryan's reaction was to ask their names. The humanity.

I was with the only brothers that I have left. I watched this back as a kid, and when I heard this, it hit hard and stuck with me forever. Integrity and honor.

It is questionable whether it is right to sacrifice eight lives to save one man, but Ryan is a true soldier, and the sacrifices suffered by Captain Miller and his men are by no means worthless.

Majority of the shots we see Ryan is through over the shoulder shots or in which he is in the middle of two or more soldiers. It gives a feeling how important he is and a lot of them are waiting for his decision.

Pvt Reiben was a brave soldier who wanted to do something valuable for his country in the war... he hated the mission he was on, and after losing 2 of his squad mates he became even angrier at Ryan. But after seeing that Ryan is just as brave a soldier who refuses to be relieved from a dangerous place in the battlefield makes him respect him... In a later scene we see him nodding towards Ryan before the tanks start to come at them, as if saying "I understand your stance...you have my respect" and later saves his life when he physically sits on top of Ryan for stopping him from moving/getting hit... Speilberg is a master at showing such small nuances from smaller characters ❤

I had the opportunity to drive Tom Hanks recently when he came to Boston. Very impressive guy. Very friendly and self deprecating. What a great actor!

This and Team America were two of Matt Damon's best performances

My all time favorite war movie. The opening battle scenes are so very fascinating. All the actors did a fabulous job.
