Agreed. In the late '90s, I had a web site with lots of information I gathered here and there. One page I put up was on rebuilding starter motors for Toyota trucks. I listed the parts you needed and started getting questions about where to get those parts from. Turns out the Toyota dealers would much rather sell you a new starter than sell you the inexpensive parts to fix your old one.

So I ran across a guy who would sell me these parts in quantity and I started selling them on-line. That slowly grew and I added more similar parts. It was getting to the point that I was going to have to decide between keeping my day job or doing the side business full time.

Luckily, the company I was working for decided for me with a "reduction in force". I was laid off on a Thursday and Friday morning I was working for myself. I had 6 months severance package so figured I would give it a go until that ran out.

Been doing that side hustle for 22+ years now. It was really handy in early 2020, within half a day of our "shelter in place" order, I said F-it and went back to business as usual. Business has been booming the last 3 years, only held back by the hideous supply chain issues.

The obvious counterpoint is that it’s not always that easy to have a side hustle.

For instance, here in Spain it costs ~$400/month (yankeebucks, I’ve converted that for you) just to be registered and be able to send invoices.

Once you take into account income tax and VAT, your side hustle needs to bring in a lot of cash to make sense.

I've always thought Side Hustle was a strange way of saying "second job" or "second income". Another phrase that didn't need replacing

At one job I had for a while, my contract more or less said I must not have a side hustle.

It depends, but with a lot of job contracts you're legally not allowed to have side hustles.

It's hard to sustain that level of dedication to a side hustle. If it doesnt end up working out with your main job then yea it's good to have that in place but the most important thing is job security right? I mean why work harder for something else unless it's something that would really change you life around hah
