It’s easier than you think! Growing Figs Trees in Containers!

Hey Fig Fam,

I walk through how I grow fig trees in containers. It’s a great option for those you have less than optimal conditions to grow fig trees in ground for a wide variety of reasons. Figs are a stunning garden piece for any patio porch or yard in a large container.

This video I highlight a Violet de Sollies Fig, that I had in the ground and moved it back to a container.

They require way less maintenance than you think!

Quick steps:

Prune the root ball every winter when it’s dormant.

Use good potting mix.

Water regularly. I use the 1” rule. If the soil is dry more than 1” below the soil line (not including any mulch on top, water your fig. I just use my finger for a quick reference! Fig trees will get stressed with not enough water, but you’ll want to stay

If you are in a cool or cold climate. After the 1st freeze, move your tree into an un-heated garage or cellar until spring after the last frost.

Reach out with any questions, I’m more than happy to help you grow figs and other garden plants!

I live just north of Sydney (Newcastle) in Australia which has a very similar climate to South Carolina & I grew a couple of some of the rarest fig cuttings in the world (striped "Panache" Tiger fig) & once they were rooted they grew like mad when I planted them outside in the shade during summer time.

I might even get some figs off them this year after they come back to life during our spring which starts next month but there's no stopping them when the cuttings take root

They grew from like 9 inch long cuttings to about 3 feet tall last summer, I kept them outside because it doesn't get all that cold in Australia !

Phil, Im in east Tenn.and re: fruit splitting would it help if I covered the top of my fig with clear plastic using a wood frame to keep rain off of the figs that are ripening to help keep them from splitting open? I would use drip irrigation around the plants for their moisture requirements. Thanks for your super helpful videos!

Great video. North FL, 8b. How about pine bark, old chicken manure, and leaf compost for my container? I have terrible problems with raccoons and the seaweed fertilizer! Thanks in advance. Just subscribed.

Hi Phil, I’m in north Ft. worth. Lost a fig last year in a pot when it dropped to 7 degrees. I’m keeping the two I bought this year in pots and brought them into a greenhouse to over winter. Are there specific varieties that would be better for my area. I think I’m in zone 8b. Thank you! If I left them outside, at what temp would I need to bring them in? How much cold can they tolerate?

Your potted trees always look amazing. Can you recommend the exact pots that you are using? The ones that I have been using only last a year or so. I need something more durable.

Is there a reason why people use perlite instead of pumice to increase drainage?

Can I leave my Hardy Chicago fig outside in 5he winter. It’s in a pot. There are some very tiny figs starting to grow. This is its first year and has had some leaves turned brown in August. Could that be due to a lot of Sun? It’s on my balcony which faces the south. I’m in central NJ. How and how much do I need to prune, if at all?

dear Phil Fig Tree person - I live in central Florida Gulf Coast area, I love figs and I'm always buying fig fruit at my local supermarket... you say fig trees can be grown in pots, I'd love to buy some fig cuttings so I can start my own experience. I've been taking notes on the pots soil and fertilizer

Hi Phil... I'm in Virginia Zone 7a and have an unheated garage and a darker unheated outside entrance basement. Which would be better to overwinter my fig trees? Do I need to wrap them? I am a complete newbie... can you please show the packaging of the soil, compost, etc. that you use to make your soil? I have no idea what soil conditioner is. Thanks... love your channel!

Hi there, very informative video. I notice people put those black sheet material the potted figs sit on. Is that plastic or something, and what's the reason ?. I notice sitting pots on concrete or paving it sucks up the water quickly in summer.

Hey, Phil. Love your videos. I have 30 potted figs here in SE Virginia. I’m curious how much sunlight your figs get. You seem to have a lot of shade/partial sun and yet your figs seem like they are thriving! What are your thoughts on how much sun and heat figs really need to grow and produce figs?

Hi Phil, I'm new to your channel and looking forward to your content. I'm in zone 8a, Georgia. I've never eaten a fig before, but in the past few months started hearing more and more people talk about how wonderful they are. Now, after today's run to Lowe's I have 3 fig trees and never tasted a fig before in my life. 😂😂 I picked up a Brown Turkey today that is about 5ft tall with what seems like two trunks and have at least 6 green fruits on it. Do you think they will ripen before the season ends? I also have a much smaller Olympian and Beers Black in one gallon pots. The Olympian seems to be doing well. However, a couple of weeks ago, the Beers Black leaves suddenly dried up, what seems like overnight, and fell off. I was keeping it well watered the same as the Olympian. Now it has two new leavea sprouting from the top of the plant. I have no idea what happened to it for it to die all the way back like that. Anyway, my plan os to keep them all in containers since Im not even sure if I'm going to like them. 😊 Thank you in advance for any information you have to give about the 3 types of figs I have. I'm going to have to binge watch your videos this weekend to learn what I can.

I live in Georgetown South Carolina. What is a good verity to grow down here in this area. It is very hot and the Figs I had growing in pots just stopped growing once the hot weather hit I had to put them under the porch due to how hot it gets. Thanks

Do you have problems with your pots overheating in the summer and restricting plant growth? I had a huge problem with this last year and my fig hardly grew and didn’t fruit at all.
