7 Stoic Keys To Happiness

“A good character is the only guarantee of everlasting, carefree happiness.” – Seneca

The Stoics believed in living a virtuous life, one with the potential to bring us personal happiness and fulfillment. And that’s one of the reasons a person may choose to live after their fashion. After all, what good is philosophy if it doesn’t ultimately bring us happiness? But in Stoic philosophy, it’s the pursuit of virtue and good character that allows us to get there. For the Stoic, the pursuit of virtue is the pursuit of happiness. If we can live virtuously, a good life will follow.

"The secret of happiness is not in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less." Love your videos, thank you Ryan!

I am mobility, hearing and memory challenged, and undergoing tests for stomach cancer and diabetes. I am also seeking new employment. I am on my own as my husband died 10 years ago. No children, no family. How do I continue as I seemingly have nothing to live for?

I have terrific friends. The little work I still do gives me joy. I volunteer in my community. I have an accessible flat. I can still walk, still do meaningful things, recently I suggested a new piece of legislation thanks to a theatre project. This week I gave two interviews to mainstream media about private property renting.

Potential. In all our forms…

“Happiness is a quiescent state. It is not jittery. It is not trying to go anywhere or get anything. It is very still, so you have to become a little still to come into proximity to it. It is as if happiness is going five miles an hour and you are going a hundred miles an hour! Well, you passed it by!”

_Wisdom from the Greater Community, Book 1 » Chapter 22: Escaping Suffering_ - by Marshal Vian Summers.

9 things to quit for all Strong Men:

1. Caring about what others think
2. Not believing in yourself
3. Not experimenting different ideas / solutions for problems (life & business)
4. Not prioritizing your health
5. Wasting your precious time
6. Wanting something (instead write a plan and work towards it)
7. Chasing meaningless relationships
8. Wasting time by scrolling social media
9. Quitting addictions for good (if you have any — consider stopping it as it makes you mentally weak + affects your confidence and all other areas of your life!) 🚀

Take it easy and I hope you found one thing helpful in this list 💯☝

I just want to say your book "the obstacle is the way changed my life", through changing my perspective on things and coming to terms that the hurdles and mountains I life is where growth and character building happen. I'm really grateful for people like you.

Is Happiness confused with joy? Joy is not the dopamine hit happiness is. it is inner peace that runs deep and overflows it’s boundaries.

Ryan, I just wanted to say thank you for your videos and books. You, along with stoicism, reading, and writing and a few other things, have all contributed to helping me find a sober and happy life after twenty years of suffering. I'm finally happy and I've even written my own book. Thank you again. I'm very grateful.

I wrote this on another channel that the Scandinavian concept of lagom, just enough of all you need in other words, seems to be the key to inner peace.

The Stoic version of happiness is contentment. Happiness is an emotion, and emotion is a chemical response caused by a stimuli. Contentment, before happiness.
