Trump’s tariff plan will undermine US economy: Rep. Peter King

New York Congressman Peter King (R) says President Trump’s tariff plan won’t correct the nation’s trade woes.

My loyalty is with balanced trade. The US population is 10 times Canada's, so there will always be a significant trade "deficit", but it's actually balanced (overall) when you consider each country's consumer power and the two GDP's. Trump should actually stop talking about this Canada-USA trade deficit like it's an unnatural thing.
The US-Canada steel situation is actually a NAFTA success story, since both sides long ago established balanced trade on this one commodity. Throwing a random tariff at Canada, as though we're the ones dumping cheap low-quality steel into your market, makes no sense. There is and has been a worldwide steel glut for over a decade and Trump's unpredictable behavior toward Allies won't exactly entice them to suddenly "Buy American" or to limit use of competitors steel. That said, Canada imports a little over half of all US steel production, so we're your best customer worldwide. We won't hesitate though to hit that incoming US steel with the same % tariff that Trump applies, just to maintain the current balance.
