2022 Subaru WRX - First Look and Ride Along

After two teasers and much anticipation, Subaru has finally pulled the wraps off the 2022 WRX. The fifth generation of the iconic rally-bred sport sedan ditches the 2.0-liter turbo boxer in favor of a new 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine. Needless to say, it makes more power but only marginally. It makes 271 hp compared to 268 hp in the outgoing model, torque numbers, however, carry over as is at 258 lb-ft but promises a much wider powerband compared to the 2.0-liter motor.

Gone is the old 2.0 L engine for the new 2.4 L engine with an additional 3 hp & 0 ft-lbs for power the driver can really feel. At Subaru we listened to current WRX/STi owners and enthusiasts alike then we built the exact opposite. The Cross Trek design team did an amazing job on this car and we can’t wait to reveal to the world what the same team has done to ruin the STi 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The "Subaru Performance Transmission" is a CVT and to offer it standard on the GT trim line is a huge slap in the face.

It's not a "Review" unless you guys drive it personally

Never in my life did I think I would see a company brand something a “performance” transmission because it can “simulate” the experience of driving a traditional automatic. If Hyundai would just cave and stick an awd system in their N cars Subaru would never be a blip on my radar again.

Should not be called a "review"

I am so happy I kept my 18 STI stock. I will probably keep it stock forever and get an older one to mod.

Screw you guys for not calling out the "all new subaru performance automatic" as what it is. An upgraded version of the same CVT as the 15-21MY with a 4.44 final drive ration.

Subaru turned its back on the consumers that made Subaru, ‘Subaru.’ Last gen Sti’s just went up in value.

I'm not sure if anything can outweigh the ugliness of the rear end and the plastic cladding.

Let me get this straight... They take the engine out of the Ascent, add a turbo, and somehow it only makes 11 more horsepower and actually makes about 20 ft. lbs. less torque. How is that even possible? And the manual is only available in the base trim; that is a straight up insult.

Hear me out, I am a focus st owner. Ford offered an "official" tune to increase torque by 90lb-ft without affecting warranty. I have a feeling subaru is planning the same. Release the car as is and offer an optional factory calibration to reach 300+HP/300TQ without affecting your factory warranty. From what I have read, voiding your warranty with an aftermarket tune.. something that subaru enthusiast do, but imagine if you can tune without loosing your warranty... just my 2 cents. I forgot to mention that this "official tune" may be available probably on the day of purchase or will be offered for around $1600 to $2000 after purchase. Buyers will have to make a choice at that point... do aftermarket tune for cheap and loose warranty.. or pay for official tune and keep warranty... smart move I think..
